BTY : the Hi-val and Digital Research brands are owned by I/O Magic and they sell the same rebadged drives under all three names, so most of the drive will be Benq/Acer drives and some will be mfg'd by AOpen or the hated BTC drives, (if your drive says mfg'd by Top Glory, it a BTC )

If I remember right most of the 24x Pacific Digital drive were rebadged Cryber drives and a few were Acer's and BTC mfg'd drives.

becuz mail in rebates are the biggest pain in the nutsack marketing goose chase. i just like the out the door price but i have in the past gotten in on ur killer cdrw threads... i love u man!!!

EDIT - btw, why r they btc's so bad? i was poking around the DR website... it mentions nothing about buffer protection.

My last BTC drive worked fine except for one thing. It wouldn't make a music CD with my Pioneer CDRs. It made data CDRs just fine. These same Pioneer CDRs worked great with my older Lite On drive. I wasted 3 CDRs before I figured it out. It works fine with Memorex CDRs though.

I picked up the hival 21x10x40 drive tonight. A word of warning. No version of CDRwin supports it, You need the latest version of EZCD creator to use it and it only recognizes it as a 10x drive. Disc Juggler lets you go 16x. The version of NERO it comes with kept crashing. I installed the latest full version of Nero and it worked fine with .iso, .nrg, and the good ol cdr win .bin and .cue file system. It worked perfectly at 24x. It does have smart burn according the to burning software. Not bad for $20 but make sure you get the latest version of NERO to make it work properly. I have not tried clone cd yet.

The Store in Burbank, CA didn't have any ATA100's so the Manager gave me ATA 133!!! for 39.99!!!

Edit: Oh and by the way... The free CDR's were SAMSUNG!!! I think Samsung CDR's go for $20 themselves...

Pinoy,
when your friend in Baton Rouge went to talk to the people at Compusa, did they even know about the sale? Because I checked in both the stores in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and neither one knew about it. The one in Baton Rouge had several of the Hi-Vals left as of Friday night, but they wouldnt adjust the price....

Update: I looked at all the Hi-Val 24x10x40 CDRWs I got. They are all Top-G/Top Glory drives. Every one of them.
There are two types of boxes. Some mention Nero on the back and have Nero Express inside. Some
don't mention the exact type of software on the back and have NTI software inside.

Firmware on the drives is listed as either "A.23" or "A.21" depending on the drive. Anyone know
where you can find newer firmware for these drives?

Dead deal in Minneapolis.

Woodbury store was "supposedly" all out.

Went to Roseville store and the CSR said that they never had any of the drives (but knew about the deal). So I asked him to call up his manager and he basically told him to cover it up by saying that they had some "other" drives that they were all out of.

Nice deal CrapUSA!

Wow, what a pleasure it is to deal with CompUSA. I think I'd rather try a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Went to my local Connecticut CrapUSA because I was in the area. Lots of Hi-Vals and Samsungs CDRs in stock, so grabbed one of each and tried the cashier. The drive rang up at 59.99, so I mentioned the ad and the cashier said it was expired. I countered that it wasn't expired, he claimed ignorance (not much of a stretch) and off to customer service I went. Girl at the counter said she'd heard of the deal, but it required a coupon. I patiently explained that very few radios print out coupons, so she called her manager. The manager told her it "wasn't at this store". I asked to speak to the manager. She said that it was "regional" and that some stores had it, others didn't, but that there was no list of which stores were participating, so you had to just show up and get lucky. I asked her to put that in writing so that I could take it up with CrapUSA corporate and Connecticut Department of Consumer Affairs. At that point she became very conciliatory, apologized for the headache and gave me the drive and the discs for the advertised price. Since that was so much fun perhaps now I'll spend my afternoon having an elective root canal without a pain-killer.

i got a hival burner at the scottsdale AZ compusa. the last one they had. also picked up the 30gig maxtor drive. the sales guy there also mentioned getting $20 off for signing up with AOL so i did that and got the burner, hd, and free 50pk of cds all for $42 out the door!. pretty sweet deal. all i have to do is cancel AOL within the next three months and i pay nothing. the sales guy said he'd done it a few times and never paid a thing for it.

all in all, quite a productive morning .

for anyone else in AZ, the compusa page shows that only the phx store up in paradise valley still has the hival drives in stock.

shows the maxtor drives as in stock at all the stores. however, i've been to the mesa store and they dont have them.

lawbeefaroni, went and checked Michigan Ave. (Chicago) Superstore half hour ago. They had probably 8 PacDig and 5 Hi-Vals left. Got the Maxtor (all of them were ATA133 at this location) and a Hival + CDRs for 63.08, had no problem except the cashier tried looking in the ad and of course got confused 'cause there was a Hival 24x in there--she didn't notice she was looking at the USB version. Anyway, my Model and SKU #s ditto EtOh's, and mine came w/ NTI software and is made by Top Glory. Thanks ATers! Have been wanting to upgrade my box for years and finally got the kick in the pants.

WTF? i don't like the nero express software. so i installed a REAL copy of nero, and one second, it detects the max write speed of the cdrw as 24x. i poke around a bit, then it's 16x max. anyone else had this issue? :disgust:

Edit - reboot and now it is normal again.

checking in from madison, WI. walked out with hi-val 24X and 50 pack of samsung digitall <--that is how they spelled it) 16X CDRs for twenty dollars and tax...the kid at the counter had no clue about this deal and asked me the details which he wrote down and then showed his manager. when he rung it up he wrote on the reciept 'chicago radio commerical price match.' so anyone in madison go out and grab it tonight (ends sat. at close)...

about the drive; the system requirements say that it needs a pentium class computer but would it burn at full speed with a lower end computer (such as my celeron 366 box with 192mb)?

this was a great deal imho...if even for the fun of pulling it off!

so has anyone used these hi-val drives yet? i am still having the same problem where nero will detect my cdrw as 24x at first... then later report it as 16x. not a HUGE deal... but kinda pisses me off.

actually, i have a hunch that the reason the rebranders change the included software is to address the incompatibilities with the drives
have not seen a lite-on that is not bundled with some sort of nero...
lg usually with ezcd
samsung with same

my day @ CompUselessA...

Went to the front desk and ask to check stock on the Hi-Val drive cause they were not with the rest of the CD-RW on the floor. She looks at the computer and said that it only shows 4 left, and said that since the count was from the morning, that they are all out of the drive (maybe shes miss cleo?) Didn't brother to check anything. So I ask her to get someone who can check the physical stock. She calls one of the sells guy, Who is shaking his head when he sees her pointing at him then at me. So I walk over to him and ask for him to locate the CDRW. He said sorry, he can only help in the camera area. Said I have to go back to the service desk and have them find someone else to help. I went back to the front desk and she pulls another guy from the camera area who came over with a notebook that had the Radio Ad fax with sku. He actually know what was going on, he went to the DVD & External drive section and pulls out the Hi-Val CDRWs. They had 6 left, so they inventory system is wrong, cant depend on that. He said not many people have been asking about the special but he remember see it.
The drive rang up at 19.00. They were out of the free CD's. (someone on thursday brought them all for 5 cents a piece cause they were ranging up at that price)

If you go to the Miami Kendall CompUsA, ask for David. He's the only one out of a bunch of red shirts there who is actually helpful. u can tell him i said that.
