I put mine in sleep...just press the little moon on my keyboard

Don't mean to derail but if we are talking about power saving, which is relevant... if you just turn off your monitor does that send any type of signal to your videocard to use less energy? Depend on brand? Does it just sit in 2d mode...if that even exists depending on the video card?

If not using my machine for an extended period (sleep, at work, etc) I shut down for several reasons:

a) Extend hardware life (hey, if that fan dies...)
b) 0-day worms (I will trust my firewalls right up until the bitches cheat on me...)
c) Noise (HT is in the same room)
d) Power savings (it's nice to save a few bucks and release less carbon)

I voted yes, but that isn't 100% true. In cool weather I leave it on 24/7, in warm weather I use sleep.

I actually timed how long it took my computer to boot from the second I hit the power button until I was logged into MSN (marking the point when the computer can be used for something). 5 minutes. It takes 5 minutes for my computer to boot. This is why I never turn it off.

24/7 running the single core CPU client Folding@Home and the GPU Folding@Home client. I cannot get the multi-CPU client working correctly.

I leave it on unless it's starting to get warm where I live... last thing I need is an electric space heater pumping heat into an already-hot apartment.

It is a Macho thing.

You can say "Dude it like my Rig Runs 24/7 and I like have the Killer Network Card too".

And as you know Macho is more important than commonsense.

The only thing wasted is heat, so in cool weather that's not a waste. Even though sleep wakes up fast, it still lags behind already on ;^)

+1 for my servers. My media center PC is off unless being used.

Why not just hybernate and use WOL to bring it back up when needed?

The machine in the bedroom I leave off when not in use, as well as the laptops, but the WHS is powered on all the time, but it goes into hybernation 10 minutes after contact is lost with the last client.

Yeah this is a very good comprise.

However to be fare to all, Hibernation and WOL means that the computer is actually Off.

It goes On by the WOL, Boots, and when it starting to load Windows part of the time that it takes to load Windows to memory is saved by the Hibernation.

Boot = Not Cool.

I live in a dorm right now so not worried too much about power savings, but I also have F@H installed for both vid card and cpu so I'm hopefully doing my part when I'm in class and not using it. Turn it on around 0430 when I wake up for crew practice and turn it off around 0000 when I go to bed.

Turn it off, unless you're doing something like encoding music or torrenting stuff. Leaving it on for no reason uses extra electricity that most of us pay for and wears out components.

There is something seriously wrong with your Vista install ShawnD1 because my system boots into Vista in < 2 minutes (Q6600, 4GB RAM, Vista Business x64, 2x Seagate 7200.7's in RAID 0). But anyone worried about boot time can just hibernate, it doesn't take very long to come out of hibernate at all. I keep my notebook in hibernate constantly and it's practically instant on.

My file server media center system and torrent box is always> In fact it just past the 50,000 hrs mark of being online. It it also has not been rebooted since Dec 28 ,2008. The last time it had complete power off was in most likely in october for a hard drive upgrade even then I did not allow enough time for complete cool down. The system was built 05/01/2002
