Looking for a (relatively) cheap and easy DVD solution for the olds, will this work?

Would take 1 24" LCD monitor (such as one of these):

http://austin.net.au/ProductLi...BEE2400HD/Default.aspx

http://austin.net.au/ProductLi...uctCode=LCD-LGL246WHX+

http://austin.net.au/ProductLi...ductCode=LCD-SA2494HS+

& then plug in a fairly standard DVD player w/HDMI that upconverts.

Will this work, yo?

Can I get sound to the speakers in the monitor over the HDMI cable?

Any and all advice appreciated

Afraid I don't know much about Aussie video (heck I don't even know whether you lot use 50 Hz TV like the Brits, or Yank 60 Hz). Not familiar with your monitor selections either, though from the specs they seem like TN panels. If that's the case, and viewers are sitting at a good angle from the display, image quality may be degraded substantially.

If the dvd player is doing the upconversion, it should then be sending a 1080 signal over HDMI to the display, and any display that can do 1920x1080 should accept it. That's the theory. I read all sorts of scary things on AVSForum, so who knows...

Are your viewers going to be using this monitor as a primary TV substitute?

No TV, just DVDs (and maybe Blu-Ray further down the track).

Are any of these monitors non-TN? Assume I want IPS or S-IPS?

If not, can you point me in the direction of cheaper 22s or 24s that are?

aussys use PAL 50hz for dvds
and yeh those look like TN panels.
You wont find as cheap IPS or S-IPS. If your looking to watch dvds then for a price of a good 24" IPS panel u can just buy a LCD TV which has DVI input if u wanted to use it for PC too.
