Well, i've desided to upgrade to a larger LCD (mostly to compensate for my lack of "manly package". But then again, thats what my big old truck is for). I'm looking at 24" LCDs. I was wondering what is considered the best 24". I've read the LCD review guide, But it did not mention much on 24"ers. I am a avid gamer and am looking for the cleanest looking, meanest FPS producing screen. I was looking at a 2407WFT from dell. Are there any other really nice 24" LCD's? Should i just get a 21"?
Thanks

Which BenQ is that? I didn't notice a part number or product number.

I'm trying to reduce our energy budget in our current house, and monitors are something I'm looking into replacing in a few places.

That one looks... fantastic.

My very subjective test convinced me that I like the Dell better then BenQ. I have Dell 2407 at work. I ordered a BenQ FP241W for home.

I put both monitors on the same video card-6800 Ultra. Both were being driven by DVI. I used the Nvidia calibration wizard thing to calibrate both and at that point to me, the Dell was more sharp (not by much). The Dell blacks were blacker and the whites were whiter. This may not mean a hill of beans to anyone else.

I find myself always adjusting the BenQ to get the sweet spot, and adjusting the BenQ is a real pain in the but because you cant see the buttons. I have never once even thought about adjusting the Dell ( other than the above calibration). It looked perfect right out of the box AO3, I believe.

I will say the BenQ was brighter, too bright. I had to turn it down.

I pulled up Far Cry on both and saw no real difference, although, I did that test at two different times. I did the same with Two Towers. Again at two different times, but with Two Towers I was thinking I liked the Dell better.

I'm either RMA the BenQ or give it to the wife, she isn't nearly as picky as I am.

To summarize,
I tested them both side by side with a 6800 ultra and for code writing, surfing, office applications the Dell was the winner for me.

I tested them separately with Two Towers and FC and maybe saw a difference with Two Towers (Preferred Dell).

Hope this Helps.

BTW, If you go BenQ, Newegg has a promo on the BenQ right now. The coupon link is on the forum somewhere. Use that coupon and the price gets real close to the Dell.

I started a similar thread the other day, and there is a lot of discussion anchored around 24" LCD monitor options. I haven't settled on one yet, but a lot of good inputs.

I'll have to check further for aspect ratio but 1:1 pixel mapping is definitely fixed now.

Just got my monitor today from NCIX. The packag had this claimer on the top of the box

"NCIX.com is now offering a free upgrade to BenQ's award winning FP241W 24" LCD monitor. This upgrade further enhances your gaming and movie viewing experience by ensuring optimal image quality with all sources. In order for this upgrade to be performed, this monitor's firmware has been updated by our technicians. In order for this upgrade to implemented, your monitor has been removed from its original packaging. After the update was applied to your monitor and verified, it was immediately repackaged in its original factory packaging and returned to our inventory.

This free upgrade adds a new menu option under s the Display Mode sub-menu. A new 1:1 selection is now available, which allows for 1:1 pixel mapping of your input source. This new option allows any incoming signal to be displayed at its native resolution without scaling the image, thereby maximizing detail and sharpness while avoiding any distortion of the image.

16:9 aspect ratio signals such as those from DVD players or video games consoles are normally vertically stretched to fill the taller 16:10 aspect ration of a wide screen pc monitor. By using this new 1:1 option, you can be sure that any source that is displayed on your monitor will be reproduced with maximum quality by avoiding this vertical stretch, and maintaining the original aspect ration of your source. "

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=19235&vpn=FP241W&manufacture=BENQ

OK. Looks like aspect ratio works mostly.

So I had a chance to play around with the upgraded firmware last night (didn't take pictures yet ).

My calibration settings DID get wiped. For those who are planning to send theirs in and have calibrated their inputs, write down your settings first!!!!

It's true that the 360 VGA 1920x1080 still stretches to 16:10 and displays 1680x1050. Clearly it has something to do with the way the 360 is sending a 1080p signal. 720p (1280x720) on VGA displays perfectly unstretched in both "Aspect" and "1:1" modes.

PS3 on HDMI displays perfectly in 1080p. "Aspect" displays the correct 16:9 image, and using the "1:1" option puts small black bars on all sides, resulting in a smaller image, which is weird. But Aspect mode on PS3/HDMI = perfect.

PS2 on S-Video is also perfect. 4:3 games display correctly. "1:1" correctly displays a tiny image at the center of the screen and "Aspect" fills the screen while keeping the 4:3 ratio.

I haven't tested the PC DVI output since I had an Nvidia card that did the scaling anyway. I'm sure it works fine though.

Another relevant quote and some pics about the firmware-fixed version:

Tried an old vcr into the composite input and played with scaling...with "1:1" mode on, right in the center appears to be right...set to "full", stretches to fit whole screen and then set to "aspect" scales to fit vertically with bars on right and left for 4:3 as it should. So appears to work right to me. I don't have an Xbox to try 1080p.

More pics in this thread show a lack of backlight bleed also.

Dell 2407FWP wins, by the fact that BenQ's 24inch display superiority is pretty negligible for an extra $200+. If you can get one for under $800 before it sells out, go for it.

For some of us, the monitor is the component that we upgrade the least often on our computer (5-6 years in my case) so we prefer to get quality. It's our eyes afterall.

For those ready to wait a couple of months, Viewsonic and LG are coming soon with new 24-inch models. LG's is going to be S-IPS...Might be work a look Depending on the price :disgust: Viewsonic's is going to be cheap, $699 if I remember correctly. Also Samsung is launching a 245T. BenQ won't be able to keep their price higher than others. And Dell will be in there with the A04 2407.

I have not seen anything about a 24-inch LCD frpm NEC however

2007 is going to be the year of the affordable 24-inch LCD, but we might have to wait until the end of summer for supply to drive prices down.

I went digging around and couldn't find any press releases on the LG, Viewsonic and Samsung 24" S-IPS models coming out this Spring.

I may want to wait until this models hit the street. I am currently debating between the available Dell, Samsung & BenQ models, but could wait if these new releases drive down the prices of current models...or if these newer models receive rave reviews such that they become preferable to the concerns I have with what is available now.

Honestly, if I could confirm that I will receive a 2407 AO4, I would pull the trigger now...with their current sale going on, and other coupons I have in reserve, I can get it shipped for around $600...but that is still a lot to spend for a gamble.

Don't buy the Dell if you want 1:1. It doesn't work!

Also, don't buy it if you have a 8800 series GPU because the Flat Panel Scaling option doesn't work either!

LG's new 24-inch panel is already visible on the LG-Phillips web site. Go to the following page and click on LM240WU1. S-IPS is LG-Phillips' tech for their better panels. It's only a matter of time before this panel appears in a LG-branded monitor. I saw a model number somewhere a few days ago. Maybe someone else can find it.

News of the upcoming Viewsonic 24-inch monitor. Will not be S-IPS, but possibly P-MVA

Finally, Samsung 245T. This will be S-PVA:

See...I didn't make anything up!

I have the same panel, and it looked fantastic right out of the box, too. I have never adjusted anything on it. I've been too afraid I'd make it worse.

Not 24" but this LG 23" looks bad ass! 1920x1200 & 8 bit! I'll be jumping all over this when I see it, as long as it's not uber expensive.

too bad their web site doesn't have any info on a release date for this sucker
