24" replacement for Dell 2405FPW

So my 2405 just died and i need a 24" replacement for it, however, being out of the computer scene for so long i have no idea what is currently the "best".

I want to spend $300-500 (preferably closer to $300) and it is STRICTLY for gaming. Anyone have some suggestions? I saw the Dell U2410 (which i'm assuming is the replacement for the 2405) but is it worth $500?

Using an ATI Radeon 5800 series video card if that makes a difference and can post other specs if needed.

I am seriously considering the Asus ML248H. It is currently $209 @ Buy.com and has great reviews.

You also may consider a refurbed Acer GD235HZ for $189 -- cheap 120hz.

Considering your budget range perhaps someone else knows of some better screens for a higher price.

I just got a Acer H243H from Staples for $169. I'm sure it's faster than your old Dell. The colors look good to me. The viewing angles are not too great. Side to side is fine but looking at it from above is a problem. It's perfect for me but I'm no photo editor. It even has HDMI and all the cables.

Maybe I remember wrong? Here it is for $179.98.

My guess is color accuracy and viewing angles. For the price difference you could almost get three for a amazing display. You'd probably need to go crossfire to do that.

If I could have got that Asus locally I would have gotten it. I don't like to buy monitors online, but none of the seven LCD monitors I've bought ever had a bad pixel. The only prolem with my new Acer is the controls are somewhat unresponsive. They work well enough and I don't use them very often anyway.

The dell monitor is IPS panel, it has good colour accuracy and viewing angles, but more input lag, while most other panels are TN and have bad colour, and bad viewing angles (washed out on the edges) but are faster. TN is usually better for gaming as it is faster and cheaper, while IPS is good for video work and photo work where colour accuracy is needed. For a cheap dell replacement for gaming i would get this. It is a TN panel, LED backlighting, the downside is compared to the U2410 it looks worse (colour and angle) has less inputs (no displayport) and the U2410 is 16:10 1920x1200 where the one i linked is 16:9 1920x1080. However at $260 vs 500 you could basically get two of the ones i linked.

I have a IPS Samsung. I view it fine anywhere in the room. But the edges bleed and it has clouds. The LED back light of this Acer has nether of those problems.

I can't believe people are recommending such crap displays for replacing a 2405. He will hate those displays after owning the 2405.

Dell or HP IPS is what he should go with.

The 2405 has a PVA panel, so buying a cheapie TN will almost certainly result in disappointment. I am not up-to-date with the availability of new PVA-based 24" screens on the market, but any of the current IPS-based 24" screens should be an improvement over the 2405 in terms of overall image quality.

The HP ZR24W can be found for $340+tax and shipping at the HP business outlet (the outlet items are pretty much new and have full warranty). Or, you could see if there is good deal for a new ZR24W or Dell U2410.

The older HP LP2465 would be comparable to the 2405 (I actually thought it had superior contrast/less yellow whites) and can be easily found for under $300 shipped; every so often, geeks sells them for $180 + shipping. But you have to be willing to take your chances with used/refurbished + non-manufacturer warranty in most cases.

IPS is not recommended for gaming alone, because it is slower, more expensive and gaming is not something where colour accuracy is key (speed is).

That's because most people have a Wal-Mart mentality and don't get the fact that you get what you pay for. Notice how many of the posts concentrate on price, and some even use the word "cheap"? Do you really want to be looking at a "cheap" display?

You really should compare the displays side by side, or order a few from someplace that will let you return them and try them out yourself.

I agree with Phynaz. You need to make sure the recommendations to go with cheap TN-based monitors are given by people who have gone from a large PVA/IPS panel to a similarly sized TN panel and are OK with it. You'll find that in almost all cases, there really is no going back.

You will be getting an image quality downgrade by going TN, and image quality is a big part of gaming. So make sure you experience it for yourself before going TN.

If you are like most people, monitors are a long-term purchase. There are definitely worse places to spend an extra few hundred $ than the one piece of hardware that you will actually be looking directly at for the next few years.

I was also interested in upgrading from my dual Soyo Topaz S 24'' monitors (MVA panels I think) to something more modern, but it seems like I'd have to spend 400+ for a true upgrade. Anyone have any thoughts about upgrading from these monitors to a newer IPS or LED TN panel?
