240sx red top Rescue

Picked up an extremely clean for the Midwest S13 in trade for my LS400 Lexus. The fact that the SR20 in the engine bay wasnt running wasn't a big deal since I have wanted to do another 240 for some time and this seemed like the perfect car at the wrong time.

After some consideration and sweetening by the PO I did the deal. I have a SR20 red top stock pull from a old part out with strut tower rust that I knew was solid so that was the plan.

The PO had told me there were issues with engine and another shop told him he needed a full rebuild. While my lexus is worth more than a roller S13 the fact that the car had decent suspension, low miles on shell, good intake and HKS 272 cams and many quality parts that I could use sealed the deal.

When we were inspecting the car when it first arrived we had a hard time finding what was wrong with a basic look over. After the deal was done we started to prep the car for the pull when I decided to run compression. Was great. Pulled plugs and threw in some NGKs and used different coil packs and boom it fired up.
Its running outside right now.... Here's a few ext shots!

Had a cancellation this morning so the car is on the lift right now with a dye treatment in the oil to see where these little leaks are coming from. Oil pressure is good. Gonna check for boost leaks after work today.

He took it to a place that didnt know these things very well and knew little himself. Forgot to mention there was a ground issue near the ECU that they missed as well.

Probably keep but upgrade as I go. Thinking about 550 injectors and a bigger turbo during the winter along with nistune.

The theory is that a friend's S13 is coming to live at my garage for the winter, I will trade free wrenching in exchange for driving lessons and using it for some racing/drifting events... I think I will be picking your brain over the coming months.

love it! i love getting a car were people thing it needs and engine a little diag later youve fixed the issue for a tenth of the price you orginaly thought it was gonna cost! damn thats one clean 240sx please change the cheap cheap wheels on it for some more clean ones. and the car will pop so much better!

Right now its running a little rough. It falls on its face a little so I havent driven it much. May have to pull it anyways since there is a really tiny leak in the upper oil pan. WORST possible place lol. Everything cant be easy right>?

The wheels are gonna go when the engine is sorted. I have a 5 lug swap from my Z32 clip ready to go. I thought about putting those 17s Kosei racing rims on the 240 since they are just sitting anyway. Really want some 15s that are crazy light. I also have the stock Z32TT rims that lots of guys run too just sitting there with tires. Hmm. I could do that tomorrow. Free is good!

This is the video of the car when I got it. The horrible ticking turned out to be the VTC gear. Really common. The solenoid gets stuck open causing a tick. Compression is low 150s across the board with a delta of 2. Only time Cam gears make any noise now is between 1000-1200 rpm.

JDM Z32 steering wheel swapped. Had it left over from my clip and the s13 steering wheel had worn badly and was the leather was loose giving me a vague feel of the road

Car makes so little power below 3k rpm its silly. With the wide open exhaust on there its hard for me to want to drive it as it sits because by the time I wind it up to get it going everyone in 4 counties knows Im coming....

My brother has a sr20det swapped into his 89 240sx. He recently upgraded it with a jim wolf cpu, and a t28 I think. He has done the 5 lug conversion on it and the 300zx rims. But hes chasing down some problem with it now and it starts but he's not driving it. I think it's an oil leak at the turbo or something like that.

Yes id atleast try out the Z32 wheels not to mention the twin turbo brake upgrade always a good decsion! and worse to worse ligth 17's are the next best way to go. i do like the OEM quality 16's from the Z

Going to be selling it soon since I haven't been driving it much.

I had two of these, one the same color and the other one black. I remember wanting a 97+ , but at the time it cost too much so I put if off and eventually forgot about it all together. These were fun cars though. Nissan needs to bring it back to kick the GT86's ass!

Theres always something to chase on an SR. Is your brothers top end really noisy?

The more I look at the cheap drags on the car the more I dislike them. May have to do something other than the TT rims just because. A friend has a set of VARRSTOEN V1s in white that I thought about. wish they were bronze like these.

I pulled the car cover off my Z32 clip and started to look at what else I can pull and use other than the hubs. Been thinking about the Z32 brakes as well so I ordered new calipers and brembo rotors and pads for front and back for trough worldpac. OMG those prices are great.
For a half second I thought about pulling all of that off the 300zx and doing a BBK on the Z32 since they fade like a MOFO after spirited driving. I mean really spirited driving...

really should reconsider the above option...
