Nope. You can use something like OneDrive to access individual files somewhat like a file system, but nothing on the phone itself unless you jailbreak it, which kinda sucks.

If this sort of functionality is that important to you, then do not get an iOS device. Stick with Android.

I've come to the conclusion that you really don't need a filesystem browser on iOS. I use OneDrive and DropBox all day long without needing a native filesystem.

Well, for the tablet side, you clearly want a Surface.

On the phone side, get the iPhone and make use of the cloud for file needs. TBH it's not really that important, there are numerous ways to get files on and off the devices. And if you're doing such heavy work on your phone that it becomes a real problem, you're not using the right device for the task and need to use something other than an iPhone for the job.

I currently use only Android and I'm considering some IOS devices. One thing that's given me pause is file management. I use ES file Explorer on Android, is there anything comparable on IOS? Because even on android I've been unable to find a satisfactory alternative.

With ES I can connect to multiple SMB shares, and multiple cloud services (including multiple accounts from each service) and copy files directly from and to the phone. I couldn't make do without this functionality.

But there's also the way it handles media: A lot of android file explorers I've tried allow me to play (stream) one file at a time directly from cloud/SMB directories, but that's it. ES lets me play a folder, or select multiple files and play them (and even select yet more files and "add to playing" on the fly). I use this functionality every single day. The same applies to images; I can slideshow through an SMB folder of images without having to download them or anything.

ES has many bugs, but try as I might, I haven't been able to find anything that can truly replace it on Android.

Possibly VLC.

Get a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. Excellent build quality, very sturdy, SD810, excellent battery life, amazing camera, dual speakers, just a hair bigger than an iPhone SE. For me it's the best phone on the market now.

this.

ios doesn't allow you to touch anything like that.

you might break it you know.

That's hardly the primary rationale. It's because of application sandboxing and making a consistent experience that an app can rely upon to perform well. The argument was stronger before it was super easy to register file handling support within apps and share content between them, but now it is super easy and apps can push the data around. The more secondary reasoning is that a large group of the population has no use for such a feature.

I'm trying to remember why the Z5 Compact didn't make my shortlist. Looking at it again, it does look very close to what I want. Maybe it was the camera that put me off it.

The camera is epic. A 23MP sensor with some sick sick processing capabilities. The stabilization is just insane...

The pictures it takes are beautiful, sharp and full of colors. What exactly put you off it?

Hey, exactly it has a web file app which you can use it to manage both iOS and android file. Above all, it doe not require any fees or registration. u just need to get an AirMore app from google play store or app store, and then use your web browser to get it worked.
