Does plex want people to use their stuff? Needs a 'wtf is plex' page on their site, and a features page would be nice too. I dug around for 5 minutes and still don't know much other than media client/server doohickey, and that's all the time I'll invest.

Yeah, I googled and found plex's site, the location where I would expect to find the sort of info you found on wikipedia. It's a little messed up that the best source of information is NOT their site.

Thanks for that btw

http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/ seems to explain it all pretty well along with nice screen shots and all. It was originally built from XBMC so it's somewhat similar but in many situations (including my own) it's a much better solution

Covered elsewhere in the thread, however... someone muffed on the ethernet port, got the wrong type. Also, there is some EU cert required that they didn't believe was needed since they thought they were selling an 'unfinished product', EU didn't agree.

Have any cheap clones shown up yet? or Rasberry pi still single sourced?

My friend in the industry is trying to clone it and bring it to the states... but the factory he got in contact with the reference boards that are building it are asking $100 per piece... :|

The factory was stating high demand is reason for the inflation of price...

$25 Model A with 128 MB of RAM and the $35 Model B which sports 256 MB of RAM and an additional 10/100 Ethernet port -- Wi-Fi can be added using a standard USB dongle

Have any cheap clones shown up yet? or Rasberry pi still single sourced?

People with iPhones don't seem to understand the concept of cheap.

By cheap clone I mean;

Second source, maybe with options and without delay at a cheap price, not necessarily cheaper price.

Gotcha. Because a $25 computer that can play 1080p seems pretty dang cheap to me

Meanwhile, we await CE certification...

I ordered one of these, and I was wondering if anyone has a good starting place for home automation projects and the like. I've found some sites and books but don't really know where to begin. I've never done much like this and know little about electronics on top of it.

So yeah... is there a certain site or guide that's considered a go-to starting point in the home automation / robotics / etc "community"?

This thing lost steam fast once they were faced with bureaucracy. Does anyone have the full schematic and bom?

For a start, http://www.smarthome.com/_/index.aspx

Home automation seems to move at less than a snails pace.

CE certification is EU - for the US, you need FCC certification. Once they meet CE rules, FCC should be trivial (assuming the CE requirements are equivalent to FCC Class B - if they are only equivalent to Class A, that won't be good enough). Their remaining problem will be the labeling rules - the device is quite small, and adding acceptable CE and FCC labeling after the fact won't be easy (for the next run, they should get the labels into the circuit board silk-screen).

I believe they will happily supply you with such - they'd like other people to manufacture it. However, that's not the same as "build one at home" - the major part (Broadcom BCM2835) is not something you are going to be able to pick up readily (or inexpensively) and it is a BGA part (the only non-industrial way to solder I know of is a special adapter that would be quite expensive), the memory part is (I believe) just as problematic, the circuit board, while small, is (I'd assume) at least 4 to 6 layers, and I'm sure there are other constraints.

At this point, they have some major players working on it - once the current teething problems are dealt with, they should be able to ramp up availability pretty quickly. If they can't, it's unlikely that anyone else can...
