FluMist is offering a $25 MIR (pdf) . If you're unfamiliar, FluMist is an intranasal live flu vaccine that is an alternative to the traditional shot. Obviously, your AR cost depends on how much your perscription plan co-pay would be (hopefully you have one). Given the current Flu epidemic, the shortage of regular vaccine available, and the fact that lots of people don't like needles, I thought this would be useful to many. Plus, think of the hot deals you'd miss out on if you come down with the flu

Too bad it does not prevent the new strains of the flue. I think the manufacturer is aware that most sources have marked their stock up by at least this amount..... and are trying to help the situation.

Thanks for the find!

It is a very hot deal for the people afraid of needle or able to afford it, $65-$25 and it is about 1/3 off, I can't afford it, I have to search for a cheap flu shot, my insurance company Kaiser ran out of vaccine for a while now, I have to look for private doc and pay $20 to get a shot. So far, I haven't able to find one, I will need to call city health dept to get help.

Just a FYI about flu mist....besides the cost.

Common side effect is flu-like symptoms for 3 days on average.......headaches, neaseau, slight temperature rise, hot sweats, cold sweats, direahha, loss of appetite, etc.

I was listening to NPR about flu mist......they reallly screwed themselves.... they made over 2 million doses, but have only sold 20,000+ so far...... main reason is cost, then age range of 5 to 60yr limites people who able to take it, and let's not forget about the side effects. Even with the flu vaccine shortage, they only expect to sell about 200,000 total......

As of last week (the 11th) Cigna and Aetna started covering Flumist. I'm covered by Cigna, but got my nasal-dose on the 10th (of course) so I'm not sure if I'm gonna get screwed or not.

Hey harryk reapply with your insurance co for reimbursement don't wait till they come to you. Since it has been ok'd by quite a few insurance companies now they should relent and cover. Don't be afraid to complain if they turn you down. They have been known to comply if someone makes enough noise.

My wife's company Wyeth makes this. Dumbasses spent all this money on R&D, then priced their product out of the market! They really need to drop their price, esp given the "opportunity" this year to establish a market and provide relief in the public health system.
As an employee, she was given the vaccine for free. She said about half the people in her office got mild flu syptoms, while the other half had no side effects at all. She was in the unlucky half, and had a headache & runny nose for ~2 days. No diarrea tho....

This vaccine differs from the shot as it is not a killed virus, but a live, attenuated one. The virus is unable to replicate at higher body temps (as in body core,) but is active at lower temps found in your sinuses. You will get a mild nasal infection, thereby convering immunity, but will not be infected bodywide. Neato....

Today is the first day I've felt normal since getting the FluMist on Thursday night. Defninite flulike symptoms but no fever, swollen glands or anything that bad. Just a runny nose, sore throat, headache, achy body, swimmy head etc. I was annoyed for a couple days and was even a little concerned that it might have been a mistake (not knowing 100% that the symptoms were going to go away), but now I feel great again.

I will take the needle any day, I do not need to feel sick again. That just sucks if you get the side effects.

i always thought flu shots also gives flu like symptoms since it's bsaically injecting u w/ mild virii and for those with a weak immune system will basically get a flu for a few days.

The shot only contains dead virii

What If You React To The Flu Shot?

The flu shot uses an inactivated or ?killed? vaccine. This vaccine can?t give you the flu.

But then again, both times I ever took a flu shot I got the flu, and the funny thing is that's the only 2 times I've ever gotten the flu, needless to say I don't get flu shots anymore.

Both I and my girlfriend received the flumist this year from our school. The manufacturer sent it to them for free because they overproduced, and the school only charged enough to pay administrative fees. We got the vaccine for only $2. We both got a slight runny nose and groggy feeling for ~6 hours, and then we were fine. Overall I'd say this is pretty painless, and that if it's a cheap solution for you.....get on the wagon.

A lot of people say this but what they dont know is that it takes 2 WEEKS for the immunity to fully kick in. A lot of these same people get this virus during this time period and just assume it's from the shot. It's not. The virii in the shot are dead already.

I don't think I'm ever going to use FluMist. The side effects seem to be about ten times worse than the tiny little sting of the needle. People who think a flu shot is painful must be incredible panty-waists.

The Flu Mist has a "live virus." Maybe someone thinks this is good, but I prefer the dead one in the shots.

BTW, the people who claim they got the flu from the shots are perpetuating an urban myth, which had its roots in reality years and years ago, when a few people actually did get sick when these shots were first developed. Since then, you don't get the flu from these shots. Urban myths die hard, especially for semi-ignorant people.

The biggest urban myth of all with the flu, though, is what people actually call "the flu". The flu has absolutely nothing to do with diarrhea or puking. If you have diarrhea and vomiting you don't have influenza, you have food poisoning or some other type of virus. The flu is like a really really terrible cold usually with more sore throat and less congestion. You feel like you got hit by a truck and it takes weeks before you fully recover.

stomach flu is a misnomer. It's actually called gastroenteritis.

And for the guy who was paranoid about FluMist beling live virus, don't be. It's been mutated to be a virtual lame duck and anyone but the most immuno-supressed people will have the ability to quickly take care of it.

I shelled out the $$ for FluMist this year because my city is completely out of the injectable vaccine. I felt mildly ill for a few hours but by the time I went to bed that night I felt fine, and have continued to feel fine.

I've read reports that have said that FluMist will be potentially more effective against other strains of influenza going around (strains that for whatever reason were not included in this year's injectable vaccine). There's no guarantee, but $25 (what I paid after rebate) is good insurance against the flu.

Here in the Boston area you can't get a shot or the mist even if you want to. A healthy college student in the area died last week from the flu and there's been total panedmonium.

They are rationing off what little supply they have to the very young and old with pre-existing medical conditions. And there isn't enough for the second shot- only the first.
