For anyone who wants the cheap gigabytes and feels comfortable navigating rebates galore - CompUSA has Seagate 160GB ATA 304907 for $39.99 after 3 (yikes!) MIRs. $20 and $30 mfr MIRs and $20 CompUSA erebate. At least the erebate can be done online with no mailing required. Available online or in-store for me.

Newer seagates are garbage for those interested in quiet. They perform an Off-line scan and sound like bumble bees when idle. No fix. I have three that I RMA'd and they sent back the same noisey problem.

My new 7200.9 300gb sata2 drive sounds funny when idle too. I have been having a hard time describing it. I wouldn't quite call it a bumble bee though. I thought it sort of sounds like it is spinning off balance. It's a very very quiet noise, but just loud enough to drive me nuts.

You don't need a quieter drive....you just need a louder fan...

I have one of these drives from when BB had it for $20, no problems I can't notice any noise at all from it, but my computer is under the desk on carpet, etc...

i had an old seagate120gb, no noise whatsoever so i loved it. but if newer ones making noise that's very sad. the hitachi160gb one actually makes no noise too.
