So for many now the decision between a costly upgrade and an overclock is extremely germane.

What's wrong with extreme germans? Without them we would have no autobahns, Daft Punk, and wienerschnitzel.

On topic: Son has a 2500k I gave to him. It's been chugging along at 4.4 for at least three years. Rock steady and stable.

Well my 4790k has been @ 4.6ghz for 2 years. I never even bothered manually over clocking, just set it to auto in BIOS settings. And this from someone who used to overlook since the AMD Barton days! It's a dead art now...everything is automated and there isn't even a need to upgrade anymore.

2600k at 4.5GHz at 1.38V. I've had it there since I got it back 4 years ago and it was run at that by the guy previous to me since he got it new. Never had an issue with it.

My primary PC has my original 2500K... I've gotten it to 4.3GHz at stock voltage, but the temps were too high, even doing everything I could short of liquid. I wound up setting it at 4.1GHz undervolted... where it has been happily running 24/7 since JAN '12.

I bought a 2nd hand 2500K for my game rig, it's been at 4.3GHz and stock volts, I think. It could easily go higher, but I don't really see the need to push it.

Obviously my first chip isn't a very good chip, but parked where it is, with the undervolt, it has served well.

How did you get hold of a 4790k 2 years ago?

After 4 years of a 2500k at 4.6 on an h90 (mid 70s load temp) and ~1.375v I had to drop it to 4.5ghz to maintain stability. But it continued there without issue until I sold it a few months ago

I think they have been and will continue to CREATE a need, mostly from software/development.

If you look at the progress in gaming alone past 5-10 years, it's been small at best, yet you still need" gazilion GHZ and latest video card" to run new games are high settings.

My question is WHY? Same old game, not much improvement.

PC Hardware has become a never ending game of cat and mouse.....and a costly one too!

huh? Are you in the same thread as the rest of us? on the CPU end its been completely dead since Sandy Bridge! OP is saying his 5 year old 2500k still rocks most games now. Moore's law no longer applies for CPUs since the shift went to mobile, nobody cares about performance anymore, it's all about efficiency and battery life. The focus is all on GPUs now, CPUs have been stagnant for half a decade. I plan on holding on to this 4790k well into 2020.

Really dude? You want to tell me with a straight face that Oblivion, the best looking PC release (imo) in 2006, looks as good as The Division (best looking release of 2016 so far imo) or 2015's Star Wars Battlefront?

Let's even compare games in the same brand. Here's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, released 2006 versus Tom Clancy's The Division released 2016.

Yep. Definitely "not much improvement."
