I thought the stock HSF on the new i5 2500k chips were supposed to be those nice intel ones like in the pic on the first page Anand's review here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/...el-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested

When I got my i5 2500k I noticed the box looked awfully small to hold a cooler like that. Than when I watched the Linus TechTips unboxing of the 2500K I see that it is just the standards low-rise intel HSF. What gives?

What gives is Anand should've mentioned that tower cooler isn't included... Intel sent them to reviewers to use when overclocking.

They sell that cooler for around $50 I think. The third page of his review shows the stock cooler mounted on a board. I could see how you might interpret his article as saying that cooler comes with the chip, because right below the picture he mentions doing a significant overclock on air without any fancy cooling. Later on one of the captions does say "stock low profile cooler" - so I knew what I was getting.

The $28 Cooler Master Hyper 212+ I bought is a significant performance improvement over the stock cooler. I should have bought it from the start so I could have installed it while my motherboard was out of the system, but it went together pretty well with everything assembled. Sounds like I'll be returning my motherboard anyway as part of the recall, so I'll get a second chance at installing it.

Tried the 212+ on my GA-P67A-UD3P. It blocks the frst ram slot. Even though, my 2500k oc's to 4.2GB easily, and without much heat.

Just move the fan up a little bit and it should be fine. I have a UD3 which has a similar board layout and you can easily put a stick of RAM in the first slot as long as you move the fan up a tad.

Hmmm, well that sucks. But it seems Anand was able to get like 4.4ghz on his i5 2500k with that tiny low rise HSF or was it on the one intel provided?

I'm at 4.0GHz using an i5-2500K and the stock low-rise cooler. When maxed out using Prime95, my temps are 75-77C with occasional spikes to 79C. Gaming its a more reasonable 60-65C.

4.4GHz? I'm sure its possible for a more skilled overclocker than myself (a total newbie who just set the Turbo multiplier in the BIOS to 40 and left everything else alone) to get there on the stock cooler and have the temps be reasonable, but I'm frankly too chicken to crank it past 4.0.

Just use normal ram with the UD3 and you should be fine. I went with Corsair Vengence ram so I can't use the last slot with my CPU cooler on my UD3.

I'm really impressed by the MSI board I have with the i5-2500k. Honestly even with the intel glitch uncovered I'm more happy with this board than any I have ever bought in the past. I played with all the features including the single press of a button "OC Genie." I was totally impressed it just overclocked to 4.2GHz (all 4 cores) with the stock heatsink and fan. I ran prime95 and gamed for a couple days without a single hitch.

I just bought a GTX570 and it helped my Starcraft 2 performance a little but not a whole lot. Once I got this processor and motherboard I'm getting 24FPS in the last round of Desert Strike (massive amounts of units)!

I'm going to make a new post as well asking how much I should expect (frequency) to get out of my new processor.
