Just build my first PC. 2500k on Asus P8Z68V-LX with Thermaltake Contac 21 cooler. Ran prime95, temps got to 70C on core2. Is that too high? Idle temps are around 30C.

Ambient is a pretty even 72 to 76f where I stay and I can't get it past 60c load @ 4.4ghz/1.264v even after 30 minutes on a tuniq tower 120 (with two 120mm low rpm fans). There's definitely room for improvement but those temps won't hurt the CPU, they might limit you a bit overclocking though.

I'll try to reaply the thermal paste. Problem is I used the one that came with the cooler. Can i just add new thermal paste or must I first remove the old one?

No need for all that I'm sure you did a fine job, although its worth a shot if you think it might have went on funny or you used to much paste. Just don't mix two different kinds if you re-apply, clean first then apply the new stuff.

It's more simple science really, you bought a 400 gram heatsink. You figure sandy is 95 watts at load and OC'd a good bit over 100 watts. 400gram sinks are only rated for about 120 to 140 watts so you're already pushing the limits of the cooler at stock. The closer you get to max potential of the sink the less capable it is of staying cooler than the CPU and temps start to creep up. If you'd spent $50 bucks instead of $25 you'd of got an 800 gram sink with significantly more surface area and a dissipation closer to 300 watts which will dramatically reduce your temps at load.

Did you manually set the Vcore? I left my Vcore @ stock, so in CPU-Z it shows 1.044 V, regardless of load. But I notice that my VID fluctuates from 0.98V to 1.36V. Should I be setting anything different?

Yes I fixed the max VID with LLC and left all c-states enabled. .975v at idle. As long as your browser is set to google you should be fine.

This is interesting. I disabled turbo mode in bios (previously up to 3.7Ghz on all 4 cores - now 3.4Ghz on all cores) and temps have dropped to 58C when running prime95.

stock 2500k goes up to 3.7 on one core and 3.4 on all four cores. if you disabled turbo then it only goes to 3.3.

Now it goes up to 3.4 on all cores. Previosly it went all the way up to 3.7 on all cores.
that cant be right. again the stock 2500k only turbos to 3.7 on a single core and 3.4 on all cores. and you said that you have turbo disabled now so that means it is only going to go to 3.3.

Not sure if this will help you at all, but I'm running an i5-2500(not k), with stock HSF and it usually gets between 60-65c under load gaming etc.

idle's usually between 29-38c while browsing etc
