why buy another hd for more storage? hd will have to come down tremendously in prices before I will buy anymore. With 80.00 you can get 250-500 dvd media that is a lot more reliable. hd crash too often, it is only for boot up and temporary storage. let's say 100 dvd for 30.00, that's 470gb. try to beat that. hd is nothing more then magnetic media made of tin can, their selling us ability to store on limited platter and charge a premium price for it.

First off, dvd media is NOT more reliable! Even in well kept enviroments with no light it is possible (and probable over time) for your media to degrade or become unreadable. By no means is it a secure method of storing data. Also, it is almost infinitely easier to keep your data on a hard drive than to keep going back to dvd-r's, which are a rather impractical solution to storing large amounts of data that needs accessed often (say 100gb+).

The absolute best way to secure data is to do both, but you can't compare reliability and value that way - it just dosen't add up.

Although I hate maxtor for incredible unreliability and piss poor warranty, you can't argue with 80 bucks for 250gb. Although I'm sure the performance is good, there is no doubt this drive is best suited as a archive or backup device because of its size, price, and the nature of Maxtors being likely to fail easy from heat (extended use) and multiple spin-ups/head parks.

I'd backup my 200GB MP3 collection and put it on a bookshelf incase my current drive ever died. Totally worth 80 bucks for that piece of mind, and much more reliable and easy to recover than DVD's.

I keep about 40-60gb on a 120gb hd that are accessed most. Everytime I run out of space it is backed onto a dvd disc. My hd may die on me but I'm not worry as it's on the dvd already so it is a backup system not use like a hd. My point is that hd are less reliable then dvd, the chance of losing data on dvd is slim depending on media quality. FYI, to restore 4.7gb takes me only 5 min. so 47gb = 50 min. I just think it is wise to have more storage then to have another hd which is not neccessarily needed now.
So far I have 100 dvd, that's 470 gb. that would take me 2 250gb hd to store them which cost 160.00? but this cost me only 15.00

How big a deal is having the 16 MB cache over 8 MB cache? Would I even notice a difference? If I just wanted a drive with speed would it be better to get the Western Digital Raptor?
