thier older drives where more reliable, my last 4 maxtors all died, 1 right before the warranty expired, the other 3 within weeks after the warranties expired.

My maxtor 160gb started dying 5 months ago (at roughly 2 yrs old), sent it in to be replaced, got the refurb and its starting to act like the original before it dies (slow access, loud crunchin type noises). I figure I'll be lucky for it to last the 1 year left on the original warranty.

All brands have their issues but I've not been impressed with my maxtor experience. Its back to WD or Seagate for me. Maxtor's RMA dept. is pretty good though.

I have 5 Maxtor 250GB 7200RPM drives. Two 8Mb, 3 16Mb. I've had the 8Mbs ones for over a 12-18 months, and the 16Mbs ones about 6 months. Two of them randomnly lost their partition information, but I think it had more to do with the cheap pos Via pci ide controller I was using. Anyways, I recoverd the data easily, tossed the card, and have not had a problem since. They seem fairly fast. One thing tho is that they run really hot. If they are on for a hour and you touch them its almost like touching a hot cup of coffee. But as I said I've had them for awhile running like this, and they still seem fine.

Pretty p*ssed off from Staples. When I ordered it, it said the item was still instock. Now it's out of stock so I've to back-order mine (same price though). They didn't even send me a confirmation email even thought I entered in my payment and everything and clicked Submit. Had to call the sales rep...told me my order never went thru because item was out-of-stock.

Just went back online and I get this in my Order Status:
