Looking to get some feedback/links on a monitor to go with this galaxy gtx670 2gb OC card I got. Just built this computer and without a monitor spent somewhere between 1500-2k so I am looking for a solid 27" monitor to game on and do a lot of cisco contact center enterprise work on.. so plenty of excel in there.

Was looking at this one a lot, but I have seen a lot of solid comments on Dell's... well guys its time to school me... GO

1440p with 4x msaa isn't possible with a single gpu, not even with a 7970 ghz oc.

You will probably be able to play half the games at 1440p without msaa, and many at 1080p without msaa.

"to gameon" and "plenty of excel"

from a cost stand point. triple asus vs239h-P 1920x1080 would cost the same as single asus pb278q 2560x1440 and give you twice the desktop space.

however you already got nvidia. which is only capable of driving two montiors. single 2560x1440 and a 1920x1080 side is your only option.

back to your two choices. go with the asus instead. it has a samsung panel and a faster response time.

I can only recommend the Dell U2713HM. I also use it myself.

This is a great monitor, especially if you can find it on sale. You dont' have to worry about the warranty issues that are prevalent with the catleaps, dell will have you covered if you have issues.

Don't listen to those will try to sway you to a trash TN panel. Don't do it. After using 2560x1440/1600 extensively and comparing it to 120hz, I much prefer the former because of the superior color accuracy, higher resolution and better viewing angles. You can game just fine on the 2713HM.

It is possible. You may have to lower some settings in some games such as metro 2033 or cyrsis 2, but it isn't a big deal. You can make everything playable with minimal compromises.

What you will not be able to do is blindly set everything to ultra in something like metro 2033. Even with SLI I still don't max metro 2033 out, and the game honestly looks no different to me. Its whatever.

that dell is a e-ips panel. the asus is a pls-ips.

the smaller asus is also an e-ips.

all ips

Source? Never seen the Dell listed as e-ips. Everything I have read says to the contrary based on specs. AH-IPS

If you're ordering in the US, Microcenter has an Auria EQ276W for just $400 + shipping. It's not a Dell, but it's still 2560x1440 and an IPS. Lacks some inputs, height adjustability, and its quality and control thereof probably isn't up to par with Dell. But you can't argue with the price

The Dell 27" 2560x1440 U2713HM uses an AH-IPS LG Panel, which is a newer version of H-IPS.

Only the 24" and smaller Dells/ASUS uses e-IPS which is 6-bit

At 2560x1440 you won't need MSAA for nice looking graphics.

This is actually true. At first I didn't believe it, but when I fired up Skyrim without AA, the jaggies kind of got lost in the huge level detail. It also helps that 27'' 1440P have roughly 20% more pixels per inch (pixels are smaller on a 27'' 1440P over a 24'' 1080P/1200P).

I still need AA at 1440p, granted not as much but it's still needed imo.

I owned a U2711, replaced it with a Samsung s27a850T, big improvement, so that would be my suggestion.

Just got this at the Dallas MC open box for $339. It's pretty sweet, no dead pixels, looks way better than my Hanns-G 1920x1200 monitor.

However, no surprise, I am going to have to lower the details on some of my games. For the first time, I can't run everything on Ultra. These 580's are starting to age.

Haswell + the next gen cards can't come soon enough.

Maybe I'm drawing a blank at what MSAA is and how it differs from the usual AA I turn on in every game I play, but play several games at 1440p with a 7950 with max detail settings including AA and rarely if ever see a slow down.

go korean

^ Good idea. The Achieva Shimians I picked up a few months back are working great. They're around 350-400 on eBay as of last week.

Might pick up this monitor tomorrow. I have a Radeon HD 7970 video card, so I am sure I will have no problem with 2560x1440 resolution.
As far as cables, what type of cable do I want to use for this? I read I need to have display-port cable or I can not get into my computer bios. So I am assuming I need to have that plugged in, along side either DVI or HDMI. If I just plan on using for video (not audio) then DVI is what I want to use?

This is TechPowerUp's complete benchmark suite @ 2560*1600. While not every game is playable at highest settings, most certainly are. The HIS card in green is factory O/C'd to 1180MHz/1500MHz. The 7970GHz in blue is stock clocks.

  • All games were set to their highest quality setting unless indicated otherwise.
  • AA and AF are applied via in-game settings, not via the driver's control panel.
  • 2560 x 1600, 4x Anti-aliasing. Highest possible resolution for commonly available displays (30"). Very good looking driver graphics settings.
