2560x1600 video card options

Okay, so I picked up a 30" Dell LCD a couple of years ago and an 8800GTX OC from eVGA at the same time. I've been incredibly happy with it, and even that "old" card was able to drive most games at reasonable settings even at that high resolution.

Sadly, my video card just died. I was an idiot and didn't register the card back when I bought it so eVGA won't warrant it past one year. The serial sticker fell off anyway and I have no idea where it is now (they put the sticker directly behind the GPU, so the heat destroys the stickiness over time...no idea who decided that was the way to go).

Bottom line, I needed to buy a new card rather than RMA this one. So, I made another mistake, and instead of asking for opinions on the forums, went with what Anandtech and other articles said. Thought I'd be very happy with a 1GB 4850 X2 from Sapphire.

Dear lord, that thing was loud. My PC went from too quiet to hear over my central air to a jet engine idling a couple feet to my left. A little noise I could deal with, but this was a LOT of noise. In addition, in the games I play, the thing was SLOWER THAN or equal to my two year old 8800GTX, and ran hotter!

Okay, so that was a bad move and that card's going back to Newegg. I've currently fallen back on my 256MB 7800GTX, which is functional but in no way fast. What options are there today that will be at least as fast as a 768MB 8800GTX in games like WoW (you might be surprised how demanding even a 4-5 year old game can be when ran at this high res w/ maxed settings), Aion (Crysis engine), and the like, and NOT sound like a jet engine in my case? I can try to find another 8800GTX somewhere, but after over 2 years I'd expect something new to have come out that's actually better, instead of a rehash. Sadly, everything for the past long while seems to just be rebranded junk. Money is to an extent no object, but excessive noise IS a factor. I've tended to be an nVidia fanboy for ages, and this first attempt at using an ATI/AMD card for years has put a bad taste in my mouth, but I'll give it another try if people can assure me it'll be quiet and powerful. Either way, help me out!

(Rest of my relevant specs: QX9650 running @ 3Ghz, 4GB system memory, X48 chipset mobo that'll support Crossfire but not SLI--though given even a two-core single-card seems too loud, I doubt Xfire/SLI is the way I want to go.)

I'm really surprised that the 4850X2 was slower. It should have been nearly twice the speed. Something was very wrong there.

4870x2 + AC Accelero Xtreme 4870X2 cooler = very low noise

the only problem is the cooler is very long, may not fit many cases...

yah shoulda been about 2x as fast since 1 4850 is faster than a 8800gtx, and scales about 70% in crossfire.

OP sounds like you need a 295, 4870x2, 285, or 4890. Or 4890 xfire / 285 sli

To clarify, it was faster in 3dMark benchmarks by about 60%, but about 40% slower in World of Warcraft and the same speed in Aion. Speed in an artificial benchmark isn't important to me, only what I get in the real games I play. I've heard WoW "likes" nVidia cards more than ATI ones though, so perhaps that was part of the issue. Given the games I spend most of my time playing, I perhaps should stick with nVidia at this time.

I'm pretty averse to dual-GPU cards and setups now given how ridiculously loud the 4850X2 was, so I'd rather avoid the 295... will the 285 or one 4890 be powerful enough to drive 2560x1600 reasonably well? I keep seeing people say you "need" two GPU's to run that res, but my 8800GTX seemed pretty solid at it, so the mixed signals are what's really confusing me. Along with the fact I haven't been keeping up with tech stuff as well as I used to, and I'm sort of shocked to "come back" to see video has seemingly barely advanced in 2 years, when it used to quadruple in speed annually.

Since i've had my 2560x1600 display:

Had X1900XT, then 8800 GTX, then GTX 280 & 260, now HD 4890.

I'd suggest an HD 4890; mine has the reference cooling & i find it silent under idle, & nowhere close to too loud under load.

Or if you prefer nV, the GTX 275/280/285.
They all will be silent under idle, & not too loud under load.

Okay, thanks n7. Sounds like I should be fine with any modern single-GPU solution. I was worried they might not have the juice, but I'll check out the 4890 or 285. Thanks!

WoW is majorly CPU limited and even the latest and greatest cards make little difference in that game, Dal will still run at under 30fps, not sure about Aion but the 4850X2 should be about 2x as fast. If you need a new card, then look into a 4890 IMO.

I just picked up a 30" HP3065 (and loving it), and I've finished configuring 66 games to run at 2560x1600. I use a single GTX285 and it powers through many games at that resolution, even some newer ones like Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Juarez, providing you drop to 2xAA. Older games like Doom 3 and Fear run awesome with 16xAA.

I?m planning to put up a review of 2560x1600 gaming in a range of games later on.

For most games a high-end card (HD 4890 or GTX 275/280/285) will suit you just fine. I don't know if Aion will be as demanding as Crysis but if it is anywhere close you'll have to lower the res down to at least 1920x1200 with medium to high settings and little to no AA. Current single cards just don't have the horsepower to run that game in all it's glory, especially at 2560x1600.

I would go for the cheapest card of the ones I mentioned above. Unless things have changed drastically in the last week or two, the HD 4890 will be your best bang for the buck. The GTX 285 is ~10-15% faster but at a substantially higher price.
