http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=445222 Ecost has basically been running this deal all the time. $66 gets you a 256MB SD card by Sandisk and a portable carrier which can hold this or other SD cards. Not sure if this is the best deal, but it seems like a good deal. Lets say you currently have a 128MB SD card for your camera. Swap the 256MB card and use the 128MB card in the USB device for transferring files and stuff.

I think Ecost has "free" shipping on items over $50, but they add a $6 "handling" charge. Don't forget 1% Ebates. Every little bit helps.

Looks decent. Sandisk has a bad reputation amongst the PocketPC crowd, but for a free thumbdrive attachment... that's cool. Anyone have experience with this thumbdrive-ish contraption? Does it work the same as a (1.1) USB thumbdrive?

it's pretty much a usb reader that complete encloses the media. lexar and some other companies have this also. sandisk was first to market. a usb thumbdrive or keychain drive is pretty much a memory card with a permently attached reader (if you will).

Yes I have heard a lot of people experiencing problems with the 256MB SanDisk Cards.

Can anybody that owns the 256MB SanDisk Card tell us about the transfer times. I
have read that the 256MB Cards have the slowest read/write times. Also there have
been reported format problems with this particular card. I am looking for a quality and
inexpensive 256MB secure digital memory card for my Palm Zire 71 PDA.

The cruzer is a usb device that simply reads the information from the memory card, I don't
think that you can write to the memory card inside the cruzer connected to your USB port you can only read the information from the memory card, please correct me if I am wrong.

Are there any coupons for ecost.com, to make this deal a little sweeter?

There was a rebate for the 256MB SanDisk SD Memory Card, I don't know if you can purchase the 256MB card, get the free cruzer, and get the rebate for the memory card.
CAN YOU????????????????????????

Thanks!!!!

I bought one of these earlier this year to get the memory stick... when i got it in the mail it didn't work. I tried all night to figure out why the cruzer didn't want to work on my computer. I called sandisk the next morning and they said to return it to them for a replacement would take 1 month. I said fcuk that... i just went to Best buy down the block from my work... bought a new one and return the old one.

After that it worked like a champ.

good luck...

Help somebody!!!! Can anybody comment about the read/write
performance times of the 256MB SanDisk Secure Digital Memory Card.
I have heard that it is really slow, is this true?

Has anybody tried to PM with amazon.com, staples, or officemax for the
256 SanDisk SD Memory Card and USB Cruzer?

Thanks!

My brother is using a SanDisk 256MB in his Dell Axim, it seems to be working fine. I'm going to purchase one right now As far as access times are concerned, I don't know because I never transferred nething to his memory card.

I got several of the 128mb Cruzers at CC a while back for about $8 after PM and 2 rebates. Bit of a hassle with the Sandisk rebate, but the Cruzer can write and read just like any other USB "pendrive" type device. One needs to install drivers for Win98, but anything later is simply recognized when pluggged in. The plus side to this combo is the removable SD card to use other places or upgrade to larger sizes. I do not know the actual write/read rate, but it quick enough for any needs I have. I believe CC has the 128mb or the 256mb SD on sale this week and you get a free 2.0 USB reader that looks like a slightly larger Cruzer body thrown in.

i have one of these and im using it in my digital camera and occasionally to copy files here and there and it works perfectly well - i got it off of ecost as well so used the same deal - and the drive comes with a neat little stretch-material case with a pocket for addisional memory cards - and the delivery time was sweet as well so i ordered two more - in short works great

I own a 256mb SanDisk SD (not the one with the USB carrier).. Tested the times to transfer files and they average about like this:
Write: 73.5KB/sec
Read: 181.8KB/sec

I don't know if these are accurate (I just copied a file back and forth from my Axim and timed it)... and I don't know if they are characteristic of this card.

I have been using a Sandisk 256mb SD card in my Ipaq 3970 for 5 months and have been very happy. I use it mostly for mp3's and Simpsons movies. I can fit 7 Simpsons episodes onto the card at a time that are coded at 216k/sec. They look great on the Ipaq 3970 so I know that the Ipaq is reading the card pretty quickly.

I recently bought the Apacer 6-in-1 internal card reader that I found here http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=1000283&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE= (thanks Anandtech members!) and used it to do a test for you. The card reader is hooked up to an internal USB 2.0 motherboard connection. I copied a 35 meg Simpsons episode back and forth to the card and to another CF card that I have (a 256mb Toshiba CF card relabled as CompUSA) to show you the times.

SD card to PC harddrive -> 23 seconds
PC harddrive to SD card -> 37 seconds

CF card to PC harddrive -> 8 seconds
PC harddrive to CF card -> 16 seconds

Although the SD card looks significantly slower than the CF card I don't really notice. It is many many times faster than my USB 1.1 Ipaq cradle or my bluetooth connection. Copying the same file takes at least 15 minutes with those connections! Rock on.

oh, i was also doing some tests on a lexar 256 sd (designated hi-speed on the package. however, they said they don't sell hi-speed ones when i called. weird).
so, i transferred over a hundred megs, to get a good testing. it transferred at a rate of 1.8 MB per sec (megabytes!). as in, it wrote that fast to the card. oh yeah, i was using a sandisk imagemat usb 2.0 reader. so, the reading from the sd must be even faster.
just fyi, i tested out by simpletech 256 cf for fun, and it was slower than the lexar sd

oh, so the point of the last post is to say sd cards don't have to be slow. and the lexars are going for around $50 after rebate
