I bought 2 spindles to go with my Pioneer A05...they burn perfectly at 4x, and play in my DVD player. A spindle of 25 is $44.50 with FREE shipping. They just say "free", but they shipped my order 2nd day UPS. Very good deal for $1.78 a disk (without risking totally generic disks at 2x)

ES Buy

High Speed Recording, Flat Surface Design
4x Certified for your DVR-105 and DVR-A05
Super Savings (1.78ea in 25pack spindle)

All I have on my PC for DVD software is NERO and DVD{cough}Xcopy.

I am still way new to DVD. You tell me how to see what these disks are, and I will, and post here.

Get a program called Nero CD Speed. Then go to Extra -> Disc info... and up at the top it should say manufacturer.

Thats a pretty good price for 4x dvdr shipped.
The cheapest 4x media I've seen is the Ritek G04 and those are usually around that price for a 25 pack w/out shipping.
Good find. I might have to order a pack after you post the what type they are. I hate burning media at 1x on this Pioneer 105.
Thanks

if you don't need the speed, stick with the 2x. 4x is like twice the price of 2x media.

ADVDInfo can be downloaded at ADINFO, then start, select your DVD burner, put a disc into the drive, select the option 0E (Pre-Recorded Information Lead-In) and press the Read DVD Struct button. You'll get a lot of unusable info and an upper case string on the right side of the 2nd line.. that's what you're looking for. , If you get an ASPI error install foreaspi 2.60 that you can get from doom

I just got these media same 25 pack for ESBUY.COM and they do burn @4x on pioneer dvr-105 firmware 1.0 I copied Replacement Killers fron hd, burn it @4x in less than 15 minutes on this media using Nero 5.5.10.7b with the default dvd setting. Movie plays with no problem on Apex 3201 and Akai DVPS-760. I played the movie from start to end to make sure I don't have the dreaded micro freezing in the end or outer part of the disc. Disk played perfectly on both standalone players.

Info from nero cd speed;

Manufacturer : RITEKG04
Code : -
Disc Type : DVD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : 1 X - 4 X
Capacity : 4.38 GB
4707321856 Bytes
Additional Capacity : -
Overburn Capacity : -

Ditto: NERO says - Manufacturer : RITEKG04

SO, my cheesy 50pack spindle from PC-Club says RITEK03 (burns at 1x),

And My Meritline 4x spindle is also a RITEK04.

Why are the 03 RITEK's so lame?

------------------------------------------------------------
10Pack DVD-R Fuji from Officemax are 1-2x Taiyoyuden

The Imation DVD-R's from OfficeDepot are 1-2x CMC - CMC MAG.

I'm new to the A05 and am running the latest firmware. Which cost effective 2X media do you folks recommend?

Thanks...

The problem with the Ritek G03 burning at 1x instead of 2x is because of the Pioneer 105's firmware being picky on what speed to burn generics at. We just have to wait for a hacked firmware(like the 2x drives) or an update from pioneer so that generics can be burnt at 2x.

I ordered a pack of 25 as well...pretty good deal for 4x media right now. Cheapest I could find was 1.98/disk in a 100 pak.

Lets all hope for price drops on 4x media now that everybody is starting to support it!

It does not burn Ritek G03 at 2X because Pioneer has found that media to be unreliable with 2X burning. The fact is G03 is not very good media, it's not the fault of the drive or Pioneer. You can hack the firmware to allow the drive to burn them at 2X, but that doesn't make the media any better and so you take the risk of getting less than perfect burns.

From what I've read, people with Pioneer 104 and 103 have been burning Ritek G03 media perfectly for a long time. In fact, it seems that G03 Ritek media is the best media that you can buy if you want to spend less than $1/disc and still have reliable media.

I see no reason why the A05, a supposed improvement over the a03 and a04 cannot burn these Ritek discs at 2x when the previous models were able to. Mostly likely, the reasoning has to do with money more than technology, which is odd considering that you'd think the DVD-R camp would be doing everything to make sure that DVD-R will beat the competeing DVD+R standard.

Don't be fooled. Burning Ritek media at 2x is 100% technologically feasible. It's politics people.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW, I just bought a Pioneer 105. It was a good deal and I figure 4x media is going to drop down to <$1 disc sooner than later. Maybe the hacked firmware some of the guys are working on will be out before than, but if not, I'll be burning 4x soon enough. Until then, I'm a patient man. I can burn at 1x for a while. I'm not happy with Pioneer's firmware not supporting 2x on generic media, but I'll get over it. Or eBay the drive and upgrade to the inevitable a06 whenever that comes out.

I concur regarding the G03's. I have never had a problem burning at 2x with my 103 and playback is flawless. I have over 110 burns with these now and they are the best, IMHO.

The 03's were under a buck each, so 1x doesnt bother me. I am just suprised that Retail 2x cost as much, or more then spindles of reliable 4x, so 2x isnt an option for me. Its all 4x bayybbeeeeeee....

If you are on the west coast, you can get 25 pack spindles for $19.99 ( .80c each) without having to do a bulk buy. I bought a 50pack, they were all Ritek03's - YMMV.
