I see no reason why the A05, a supposed improvement over the a03 and a04 cannot burn these Ritek discs at 2x when the previous models were able to. Mostly likely, the reasoning has to do with money more than technology, which is odd considering that you'd think the DVD-R camp would be doing everything to make sure that DVD-R will beat the competeing DVD+R standard. Don't be fooled. Burning Ritek media at 2x is 100% technologically feasible. It's politics people. EDIT: Oh, and BTW, I just bought a Pioneer 105. It was a good deal and I figure 4x media is going to drop down to <$1 disc sooner than later. Maybe the hacked firmware some of the guys are working on will be out before than, but if not, I'll be burning 4x soon enough. Until then, I'm a patient man. I can burn at 1x for a while. I'm not happy with Pioneer's firmware not supporting 2x on generic media, but I'll get over it. Or eBay the drive and upgrade to the inevitable a06 whenever that comes out.

A03/04 are released earlier so someone was able to hacked the drive and patched the firmware to burn Ritek at 2x. A05 uses a different micro controller so the patcher has to start all over again. Currently they are working on it and maybe patch for A05 will be out in a month... hopefully...

Anyone see any 4x DVD-RW for a reasonable price in fairly low quantity? All I see are non-rated, which I can only assume they will burn at 1x. That sucks when I burn to DVD-RW before I burn to DVD-R to test the disc setup first.

I don't beleive a 4x DVD-RW media is available. Let alone a 4X-DVD-RW drive.
The pioneer A05 is a 2x DVD-RW only.

Ok, that would do. I have read on one forum that Pioneer makes DVD-RW media that will burn at 2x. I haven't seen any, and they 1x media I saw from pioneer was like $9 each piece plus shipping. That's a bit steep. I would love to find somethign less than $5 each disc in a quantity of 10 or less.
Just so this isn't an I wanna post, the best deal I've seen on DVD-RW is 1x Maxell's at Staples for $9.95 after a $5 MIR for 3 of them. This is what I'm tempted to get for data backups. Anyone have experience with the Maxell DVD-RW's?

anybody? I heard it may cause damage, and you need a special pen.
