anybody? I heard it may cause damage, and you need a special pen.

From what I have heard, the sharpie markers are oil based and can eventually penetrate and corrupt the die. Either use markers specific for cd/dvd's or I use the hub labels from labelgear . They have worked out great for me.

I read on my FUJI DVD-R that you SHOULD use oil based. This doesn't mean that Sharpies are ok (I don't know). I was in Office Max a few days ago and the pens special for CD-R's were water-based so I passed on them. They said clearly that they would wear off after time.

OK, I broke down and ordered a 25pcs spindle.

I may soon have more DVD-Rs at home than CD-Rs.
I still have 20 Fuji discs I got from OM when they ran a rebate. Came out to be about $0.70 per disc. I believe those are 1x. Not sure though. I should be covered until prices really start coming down. It seems the media are getting cheaper already, what with all the rebates lately. Still a long way off for the FAR but hey, at least they are getting reasonable.

I will use these 4x for backups and stuff that I don't care if the disc is unreadable in 6-12 months. For anything else I will use the Fuji discs. So it all works out fine.

I use to label my dvds Staples has a 4-pack for $5.50, I dont see a reason to buy a cd stomper and spend time putting a paper label over the dvd. Used a sharpie on 1000's of cdr's and never had a problem as well.

Label tip --

From what I have read, you don't want to use a Sharpie to write on these DVD-R disks because it might bleed through and damage the data underneath.

What you can do is write with a Sharpie on the very center hub of the disk. This is a clear plastic section without any data on the other side. If you don't have hub labels, this beats not writing anything on the disk. It is pretty easy to read and cheap to do. A fine tip works best.

I don't see how using a sharpie would corrupt the dye on DVD-Rs when they've been working fine on CDRs for years. I have a couple generic CDRs that were marked on with sharpie YEARS ago and the data is still readable.

In addition, I have yet to see any page that has PROOF that Sharpies aren't good to use on DVD-Rs. A search brings up a bunch of post from various forums in which people propagate this claim but AFAIK no one's actually proved this to happen.

Maybe it only happens in a particular climate. But the dye in a sharpie will (very slowly) run through the blank. I've never actually seen it happen first hand on a dvd-r because the technology is too new, but on my old (3-4 years old) cdr-s i've seen it happen and the data is unreadable.

Has anyone recently or in the past got a batch of these that are not RITEK G04? Wonder why they don't put RITEK on the ad? allmediaoutlet and rima.com does.

Also, any experience burning tese at 4x on sony 500ax?
