27-30" monitors other than dell

I love Dell monitors, but the 27" and 30" versions are simply too expensive for what I need. I currently have 2x 24" Dell monitors and would really like a 27" or 30" to go between them. My home business is starting to gain momentum and I spend a lot of time flipping back and forth between many windows, so I could gain the benefit of a bigger and higher resolution monitor. I really don't want to spend $1k for it, though. I was hoping to find something good in the $500 - $700 range.

I've been looking around and haven't found anything except these stupid monitors that use 1920 by 1080 resolution. Whoever started that trend needs to be punched in the face.

From what I have seen, if you want to step above 1920*1200, you are looking at spending ~$1000.

27" Apple LED Display: $999
27" Dell: $1100 (last I saw, it might be $1000 now)
30" LG: $1100
30" <insert maker here>: $1200+

Or, you can get another pair of 24" monitors for the same price at 1920*1200 x2 resolution vs 2560*1440 (or 1600).

this is only thing remotely near your pricepoint, but it is severely limited compared to dell 27":

I am sure in few years we'll have TN monitors on these reslutions (2560x1440) with better price, if that's what you want... there was time when 24" and bigger were all good non-TN panels, then they started making 24" and later 27" TNs with 1080P res.

Maybe I can just do a single 24", but I was hoping for a 27". I don't think I can justify the expense of any of these fancy pants monitors since I don't really care about color. I just want pixel pitch. I guess I'll keep looking around.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

The apple 27" is pretty darn nice looking, it's out of your price range though-one of the only glossy panels I really like!

The question for you is: perhaps look at a previous year model Dell 30"? There's absolutely nothing wrong with them.

I'm not a big fan of glossy to be honest, but I don't hate it.

What's the difference between the new 30 and the older one? Also, where can I buy it new? I don't see it on Dell's site.

The U2711 can be had for $750~ if you catch one of Dell's promotions. I've seen 3 since last November.

I really don't see what all the hate about 1920x1080 is. I mean yea, so its a bit less work space, but you're already using multiple monitors. It's not like before when you had 1 - 20" screen max(generally).

I mean, if you've embraced the flawed technology forced upon us before it was ready (LCD) already, you may as well completely give in.

I understand what you are saying. The reason I dislike it so much is because it is becoming a popular trend and it is making the monitors with a better pixel pitch harder to find. Also, I am used to 1920x1200 at work and home. If I'm going to buy another monitor I want it to feel the same or better.

Dell 27" on Ebay

[Justifying it to myself]

I've been considering this. It's more than I want to spend, but I can't make myself get a 1920x1080 24" and the Dell 24" is already $500+. For a few hundred more dollars I could get a much larger monitor with a much higher resolution...

[/Justifying it to myself]

Someone talk me out of this.

^^ Ya gotta go 30" for the 16:10, man. I keep hearing reconditioned U3011's can be had for about $850.

My wife told me I was being stupid because she knows I'll want a Dell 27 or 30 at some point in the future, so there is no reason to spend slightly less when I'll just be disappointed. The boss has given me the green light for up to $1k and I'd like to get a 30". If I could find a 30" for under $1000 I'd buy it right now.

^^ Won't the dot pitch on that be gawd awful?

If you're dealing with any text, then clarity is a priority. At the same resolution, a 24" will have slight-to-moderate better clarity/sharpness than a 28" because of smaller pixel size.

At 1920x1200...

24" = .27 pixel size
28" = .303 pixel size

Better than a 1920x1080 I would think though, which is all to common in the size range of 24-28 now
