big as hell. tried tv out to my 27" tv and it was horrible for text just as everyone else has claimed/stated. It does seem like it would be good for games and if that were the case I would rather save up for something with a better warranty. thanks for the temptation hardwarejunkee.

huey1124: Matrox makes some flavors of Dual-Head video cards (G400, G450 are the newer ones). Also, there are some Geforce2 cards out there that are dual-head as well. Check http://www.pricewatch.com/ for current prices and vendors.

Based on replies in OT, here and General, I ordered the 27" Class A refurbished Gateway Destination Monitor from CompGeeks for $319 plus tax (I am picking it up tomorrow).

I will use a switchbox to use both monitors (alternately).

If anyone can see a flaw in my reasoning (for using it as a second monitor for gaming and DVDs) PLEASE post here as I can back out of the deal without penalty BEFORE tomorrow.

This monitor is perfect for a nice Home Theater PC setup. Combine this monitor with a dual-head card for DVD playback or a HDTV card and you're all set.

The monitor can display 480p and 1080i formats for HDTV.

not really a 'deal', but the only Video card I know of that has a dual output is made by Matrox was like $300 back in August...probably much cheaper now.

not what you wanted, but hope it helped.

I'm sitting next to the 36" right now at work. You'll give yourself a headache if you're too close, but sit about 6-10 feet away and it looks clear.

If you want a dual-head card for gaming, I would stay away from the Matrox cards. We have some of those at work and are just plain lowsy for playing Quake2.

Your best bet is to put a 2nd video card in the computer, or get some top-of-the-line Nvidia based model.

apoppin: if you're within driving distance, $319 is a hella deal on that. Whats the worst that could happen, you don't like it and sell it for more?

It seems these things always originate in CA, not too hot for us midwesterners (or east coast)

Well, shipping is really pretty cheap via UPS ground, if I remember. Total would still be under $400 and you wouldn't pay the $25 tax I have to.

But yes, $319 is an excellent deal. I stopped by Gateway to get the specs and THEY are selling a Grade B for $499 plus (big-time) shipping plus tax. Originally it cost over $1,000.00

Raspewtin confirmed games look better than his HDTV!

from what I understand, these are better than television equivalents, bc they are actually using monitor type construction. Noy scan lines but pixel based.

Good luck

Sorry, I have been out of town and could not respond to the earlier question.

I am using mine behind a switchbox. I have a wireless keyboard with a mouse and I can sit across the room and surf(like now) - I watch DVDs and use the TV tuner in my PC for a TV receiver. I just bought a tivo and I will truly be a couch potato!

As far as the comment about PC Liquidators that was made about trusting them, i completely disagree! I have made at least 20 buys from them with only one problem. They substituted a video card for what they felt was an upgrade, I did not. i returned the card and got a refund (even the shipping). I give them a thumbs up!

The monitor is probably really a TV tube inside, but the connectors on the back are simply VGA nd RCA jacks. I connect the VGA to my pc and my dreamcast into the RCA jacks. My wife says I am going to sprout root in my chair (what day is this?)

These are rebadged NET-TV's that I mentioned last week. These were selling for $200 for the 29 Inch and $300 for the 34 inch. They had them at the robertaustin computer show two weeks ago. Not a bad deal tho but the shipping is bank!

Aren't satisfied with a 19 inch monitor?

What are you talking about? Perhaps you are satisfied with a 19 inch TV or never plan to upgrade to HDTV.

Well, this $319 Gateway Monitor is an awfully cheap way to upgrade to a better "television" than buying either a HDTV or a WEGA and it's probably better for gaming and watching DVDs.

I will still keep my regular monitor for graphics and regular computing.

BTW, don't buy from PC Liquidators - buy from CompGeeks - it's $70 cheaper!

Thanks, hardwarejunkee - will I have any problem with this monitor with ATI Radeon drivers and Win98SE? I will use the dual boot feature to use Win2K ONLY with my regular monitor.

I have 7 or 8 of the 36's at work and i think they suck the science dept wanted these instead of the 32in jvc and scanconverter(they can do 8x6 at 75hz) the rest of the school has but they only do 800X600 at 60hz so your regular monitor looks giant and flickers (they bought splitter boxes to use tv and pc monitor together im used to 1024X768 on 17in monitors) and text on the monitor does not look any better than the jvc's and they only have a VGA input so if your thinking of using them as nice tv think again and made the teacher that pushed them to purchasing these stupid things look bad when no one could use thier vcr with it.

Perhaps the problem is the splitter boxes.

I will use mine with a tv tuner card (as it is intended to be used).

Anyway, I'll have mine tomorrow. I'll post my impressions after work (or maybe the next day). Worst comes to worst, ComputerGeeks offers a 30 day money back guarantee (minus 15% restock - so it could cost me $60 if I don't like it).

Check out the Princeton 2.7AV too. It has video and VGA inputs, stereo speakers, and a built in line doubler. They have been as low as 599 on the net recently.
