Well I was gonna get a 2500+ but it seems most are locked now. (regardless I'm heading to frys in the morning to see if they have any unlocked ones left). But assuming they don't, I think I am gonna go with a 2800+. So I'm wondering if they are multiplier locked or not?

Kinda on a side note I currently have a 1800+ (pal) gf3 ti200.. Would I be better off performance wise upgrading to a GF FX 5900 (non ultra, and yes im set on this gpu) instead of going with the 2800+ for now?

I'd get the video card, it'll be a huge boost over a GF3. Either upgrade would be nice though. Not sure if the 2800s are locked though...

Hi,

i got a 2500+ a week before and it runs at 1833 Mhz but also works at 3200+ if the FSB is changed to 200.
but my problem is that even when i am running my comp at 1833MHz my comp keeps on getting restarted again and again.
I installed PC alert 4 which came in my motherboard driver utilities CD to check CPU and system temperature.
It reaches 53 C or 54 C.
what should be the ideal temperature for a 2500+ when not overclocked?
i see here sugarkang is running his 2500+ overclocked at no change in voltage and temp.
thats wonderful but i am afraid if i do that would i be risking my cpu ? 'cos as it is my cpu temp is going up to 53Celsius even when not overclocked?
what shall i do?
is it a RAM compatibility problem?
also in the PC alert monitor the value at System fan is 0.what does it mean?
do i need to buy another fan to keep things cool.
also sugarkang, is your PC working fine when overclocked?
shall i also do it?
whats your CPU fan? and are you using any special heat sink?

thanx

You can not compare the temperature readings from different motherboards as the readings will vary widely due to the method and hardware used for measuring die temperatures.

It would help if you listed all of your system components: motherboard, memory, etc.

If the fan speed is reported as 0 it could be that the fan does not have the capability to report rpm's (third wire) or that it is unplugged or perhaps plugged directly to the PSU. Look to see if it starts spinning when you turn your machine on.

hi,

thanx for replying.
Well my system's configuration is:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ at 1833 MHz
MSI K7N2 Delta series
256MB Kingston DDR RAM @ 400 MHz single sided.
My AGP is an old one from my previous comp.... Geforce 2 32MB
Maxtor 30 Gb HDD

the cpu fan speed is ok i guess.its 3183 rpm but the system fan is showing 0 in PC alert.
but sugarkang is running his same CPU as mine at overclocked speed of 3200+ at very fine temp of 46 Celsius and mine is not yet overclocked though i saw that it could run at 3200+ but i am scared as already it is going up to 54 celsius!!

do you think it could be because of ram??
how can we benchmark and test DDR ram? any software or testing utility for this?
or do you suggest any extra fan in my system?

thanx so much buddy for replying so promptly!
thanx

AMD 2500+
ABit NF7-S v2.0
512mb Samsung PC2700 + 512MB Corsair PC2700
Volcano 7
Sparkle 350W power supply

My question is why can't I run 3200+ levels without changing other things? Everyone else can hit 3200+ right outta the box but it seems I need to change my voltage to 1.75 from 1.65. Is it my sh|tty power supply? Or am I perhaps being held back by my ram?

Your particular chip needs a little more voltage. No big deal, some chips can't even hit 3200+ speeds, you should be happy.

hey got a quick question for everyone, im not a pro at OCing. In fact havent even OCed anything (had a few friends show me a little bit on their machines)

Whats the "optimal" way to reach 3200 speeds (if the chip can)

Better to set the multiplier up higher?

Better to set voltage higher?

Better to increase FSB?

Not really sure on these items,

Thanks in advance

first, you must have an nForce2 board. otherwise you have to screw with the cpu.
not worth the misery in my opinion. just get the nForce2.

if your barton 2500 can, then all you have to do is change fsb to 200 from 166.
if unstable, then start upping voltage. 1.65 --> 1.70 --> 1.75
have proper cooling.

DIGITALWORKSHOP:
i have the world's crappiest PC case.
i'm sure i can get lower temps once i switch out of this case.
one 80mm exhaust fan going out the back.
no intake fans.
my cpu cooler is good.
it's a zalman 7000 all copper model. fits the p4, axp, a64.
i ran prime95 for hours and hours, at the highstress cpu test.
no stability issues whatsoever.
played gta3 for a couple hours, no problems.
ran a million aquamark tests, no problems.
it's my first overclock, and i'm surprised at how easy it was.
though, now i'm wasting all my time reading about improvements and modding.
i've got the upgrade bug now big time.
