You keep saying that....if you already have a card why buy them direct?
DIY is way more fun,you have the card to game on and you learn about crypto currency from the ground up.

I agree, DIY is way more fun if you're a hardware junkie and love hunting for good deals like I do. But it is also a lot more time consuming and can be frustrating when your cards crash while you are away for the whole day or a couple of days.

Because it's better in every possible way with a higher risk of losing more.

Heat/Noise/Wear/Interference come to mind as reasons not to do it when you can just direct invest instead.

Yep, not everyone has the luxury of having an isolated/dedicated room for mining purposes where they can blast the fans and heat all day long. I'm already getting worried about the summer heat... and I live up north!

Now imagine its two years ago and you took up BitCoin big time with those 7950s....perhaps you finally sold at say $800 which was doable just recently as a matter of fact.

Still think H/N/W/Interference would be such a big concern...?

I had some old cards laying around and bought a few. Fun project and the heat is great because it's 40* in socal right now but it could be 80+ in socal any time. Plus if you have a gf or wife the extra noise and clutter isn't welcome. I had to run a few long extensions to make sure stuff was on a different breaker. Since I also have few 55" inch tv, now I wish i'd have gotten the led over the lcd.

If coins tank and a glut of cards come on the market - would you really WANT one that's been cooked at 100% usage 24/7?

The price pop irritates me because I was looking forward to upgrading my machine after the holidays, as a gamer, and was seeing used card prices settle into a range where I was comfortable actually spending money. All of a sudden people are throwing full NIB retail + inflated price money at them.

If you're a gamer and not a miner then why not just go with nvidia?

Well a 780 is ~$500 and a 290 is ~$500. A 290X is ~$600 and a 780ti is ~$700. Where's the benefit of going nVidia? The benefit was the $400 and $550 290/290X and that's gone now. nVidia didn't improve their perf/$ since then, AMD's has just been ruined.

Yeah, it sucks that gamers are getting screwed by this... Weird to see the 770s cheaper than the 280X, even some 4GB versions. Too bad they don't come with games anymore.

I didn't have my 7950s two years ago, and when I got them LTC even at $2.50 was more profitable than BTC at $40.

Say I had bought 16 BTC instead of two 7950s.

I'd have made probably 4 coins in all these months mining them.

That's $12,800 to buy, or $2150 after gear and electricity to mine.

Which looks better to you?

What everybody has already said, plus nvidia is still overpriced. I've always liked the performance and features of team red better anyway - seems like I'm one of the few that never seemed to have problems with their cards.

I was lucky enough to snag a 290x but then fucked it up when replacing the heatsink. It's selling on ebay now for ~$300. It is clearly marked as damaged... weird times.

I wish I would never have bothered to remove the heatsink.

What did you break? I found the reference cooler design to be relatively simple to remove.

Not sure; I tried so many things but it never got to post until I replaced the card. I never had problems until after I replaced the Heatsink.

If i would of not dumped my altcoins I mined for 4 months I could of made 35 BTC. I still have a large stash of DGC waiting to fly pass the moon in the near future.

Lol guess I'm lucky, they raised the price back up tp 419$ for the card I paid 329 few hours ago. This is getting a bit ridiculous.

They won't say but what happenned is that they restocked and forgot to check the price, when they realised they were at MSRP, they hurried to raise it up.

I ordered 2 R9 270x but when I saw that, I cancell the order and took that R9 280x.. price was just too good to let pass.

Looking through the seat cousins I found .01 BTC in one of my old mining accounts.

Gives new meaning to loose change when that's worth 90-100 bux.

I did misplace 40 name coins though….. that hurts.

What the coins really represent to me is a middle finger to nations that print their currencies into the dirt, currently as long as nation states continue to use the tactic of devaluing currencies I think there is a lot of legs left in where they crypto currencies can go. I really doubt nation states will ever be fiscally responsible, but crypto currencies may actually force them to.

Real allure for mining LTC for me is the possibility they go to 100 in 12 months. Looks like a massive bubble to me though.

You're off by an order of magnitude there.

Oh, yep, but it's off in the right place. I found .1 BTC

Wondering if I'm better off having not found it for another 6 months and selling it then rather than now. Losing/forgetting about it 12 months ago was somewhat lucrative.
