29" Curve vs. 34" Curve (21:9)

Thinking about getting a new monitor...

Currently, I'm running 2x NEC 20WMGX2's and a 39" 1080p T.V. above my 2 monitors...

I'm thinking about getting either a 29" or 34" Curved monitor -- 21:9 aspect ratio... either 1080p or 1440p.

I don't know if there's a huge difference in size, or if it's noticeably bigger on 1440p, but 1440p is also a lot more resolution to be pushing (I'm guessing the PPI is relatively the same) so gaming will be quite taxing on the GPU's... right now I'm running a GTX 780 and I'm gaming only on 1 monitor (1680x1050), and will probably be waiting for the next Nvidia GPU to come out... (the TI edition at least) before I plop down the cash for one...

Anybody with a similar dilemma?

i have a 34 ultra wide
i would get the 1440p one over the 1080p one every day of the week

for me i cant stand the limited vertical rez on 1080p its aids, but yes it takes more GPU to do it, i have a 980TI and i can not run ultra settings on the newest games

I would get the 1080 one if and ONLY if this is for a near-exclusive gaming machine and you're allergic to turning down the settings to the point of spending the entire rest of the screen's lifetime with a suboptimal resolution. I have 34" 1440s, and they are utterly fantastic for everything except gaming and are still extremely good for gaming if you have the horsepower.

+1

The extra real estate from 1440p goes a long way.

I have a 29" monitor. The 780 is a good match performance wise, but eventually I want to upgrade to a 34" which will definitely need more power.

The 1080p height can feel a bit limiting, especially if you are used to 1440p, but it is a very nice upgrade from 1680x1050 (my previous monitor's resolution). You can have a video playing on one side whilst browsing on the other, something that was painful to do before.

I would agree with Xthetenth If you don't want to sacrifice detail and money is tight then the 29" is the way to go. I've not regretted doing so.

what brand are you guys running? I also do photography as a hobby, so my 20WMGX2's served me pretty... well... I guess a 3rd option will be to get a 3rd 20WMGX2 from ebay... Then I can game in the middle, and have my other 2 screens be other crap...

But curious as to what you guys do...

Dell U3415W and LG 34UM95. Best and second best monitor I've had.

Home setup is the U3415W with two 27"s next to it. It's a very awkwardly wide setup. I rarely need the wing screens but I own them so why not. Work is the LG, and that's my laptop's HDMI port tapped out. It's a great screen and quite satisfactory (wouldn't say no to more for when I need just a few more PDFs open, but I rarely find myself actually needing them).

dell over samsung? samsung is VA... so color accuracy may not be the way to go with that...

It's funny. Ive had a dell 30" since 2005/6ish and have been running 2560x1600. Just picked up a 27" acer 1440p gsync 144hz ips panel and feel a bit of a downgrade. The vertical realestate is missed and with the panels sitting side by side the 30 is gigantic and much more immersive for gaming.

I'd say go for the bigger monitor with higher resolution and you won't regret it. I personally won't go ultrawide until they have a 39" or bigger. The 34" curved screens still seem to small for me.

I feel the same way. I have a 29" ultra wide and compared to my 32" Benq, it feels tiny. The 34" would for sure be better, but not quite enough vertical for my tastes, so I think your 39-40" ultra wide is what I would be waiting for as well. That's me though, my son for example will game on anything and cares far less than I do about immersion.

So for my 20wmgx2, the vertical is about the same as the 34"? I see on mass drop they have the lg 34" 34UC97-s for 729.99

How does this compare to the dell? This one looks pretty sleek...

For your info:
A 27" 21:9 screen has about the same vertical as your 20" 16:10 screen.
A 34" 21:9 screen has about the same vertical as a 24" 16:10 screen, so about 20% more than your current monitors. At that size I would go for 1440p.

Damn thanks Piroko! I just need a GPU that'll push 1440 @ max sliders

Thinking about the Samsung 34" since the bleeding of the IPS is apparent... IPS vs. VA

what's your opinion on these? More probably for photography than gaming... if it's good for photography, it'll be fine for gaming!

I have both the 34" Dell U3415W and the BenQ BL3200PT. The Dell is wider but the BenQ is much taller. Both are fine for me.

what about a 34" 2560x1080p screen? Reading that 6GB of VRAM doesn't cover tomb raider at Ultra on a 980Ti makes me worried that future games will definitely require more VRAM @ 1440p.

Don't go below 2560x1440p

I had this dilemma a few months ago... I ended up with a 40" 4k monitor.

Then, I created custom resolutions (did this through nvidia control panel) and put my games in windowed mode then picked the custom resolution.

So, for example, I have 3840x1080, 3840x1260 and 3840x1440. It looks ultra wide but i still have desktop space to play with. Also it makes it easier on the video card to run the game content.

Also with my particular monitor, I have PIP so I've hooked up a laptop for example to run some content in the lower right corner of the monitor and set my windowed game to 3840x1080 which spans the full top half the screen.

It equates to roughly 4x20" 1080p monitors all in a single monitor... and I have a lot of flexibility how to manage that content.

okay, I think I have it figured out: I'm going to wait for the new Nvidia cards to come out. I'm down to these 2 monitors: LG 34UC88-B or the 34UC98-W. Difference is pretty significant. Right now, the 34UC88-B retails for 999.99 while the 34UC98-W retails for 1199.99.

For the life of me, I think the only difference (on LG's website) besides the color, is the thunderbolt port. Right now, Micro Center has the 34UC88-B for 799.99... that'll make it 400 less than the 34UC98-W... If the only difference really is thunderbolt, I'll jump on the 34UC88 in a heart beat, since I don't really use a mac anyways, and $400 for the premium is not worth it to me!

Anyone with any info on the 34UC88-B vs. the 34UC98-W? can't find anything on the interwebs...

Same panel as the Acer. I heard the other Asus ROG monitor had more QA issues than its Acer counterpart but I have no data to back up that claim. Currently when looking that the choices I am hesitant to purchase any of them due to QA issues.

Apparently Asus have been very keen to replace monitors with particular defects, like too much light leakage due to the panels being too far apart. I'll see if I can find the article......
