I know that Sapphire build cards for ATI, however their own cards usually just say "Powered by ATI" not built by them...

So I was suprised to see that in the CCC, it says:

Graphics Card Manufacturer Built by ATI
Graphics Chipset ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT
Device ID 9400
Vendor 1002

So I guess I have the same card as the guys who want "genuine" ATI video cards?

Anyone else get the same thing?

My HIS HD2900XT says the same thing; even the ID's are the same.

Maybe the new AMD is transitioning away from direct product sales and support?

Or did the AiB vendors just mess up again?

That's what I said...

The ATI cards that Sapphire builds *for* ATI.. say "Built by ATI"
The ATI cards that Sapphire builds for themselves say "Powered by ATI"

But in this case it's different..

2nded, if it works and the price doesn't suck, is this relative to anything?

It doesn't really matter at all...

But a quick look down the forum topic list looks like half of the stuff here doesn't matter..

Just from looking at all the pics of all the 2900XT's , I am convinced that for this release ATI built them all "in-house" and just farmed them out to all the manufacturers to put them in their respective packaging.

And yes this probably does not matter either.

Built by ATI cards always sold (on the used market) for a premium, over the powered by ATI card, I though?

Yes, because people seem to want a card "Built by ATI" because there's some sort of reason why that would be better (it used to be that they had a good warranty...3 years I believe...but that's been knocked back to 1 year now)..

Even though the cards I believe are all built by Sapphire anyway...

correct me if im wrong but dont ALL the cards come right from the same factory and basically EVGA sapphire, msi and all others are just the mass purchasers who then box them and put a nice sticker on it? aren't they all the same cards in the end?

IIRC, it wasn't always this way. The GPU chips used to be licensed along with some specifications for memory, voltage, and other connections. I think to cut costs and development times--maybe related to nVidia's adoption of the short, six-month cycle--board makers started using the reference designs (put forth by nVidia and ATI) more and more. Now almost all cards are produced off the reference design, except for a sticker.

Warranty is the only this I can think of. But I don't know the details of this go round.

Uh, you need to go back to the TNT2 days to find cards with differentiation. With the GF1, Nvidia began locking down the design more and more, until we got today's cookie cutter cards.

To be fair, there are still some vendors who release highly over clocked versions, or those with custom cooling solutions.

Nvidia put everything on lockdown after the FX series for their flagship cards.

At the mid range and low end the cards are still produced by many OEMs, but top end is always done at one location for QC purposes.

This isnt news.

I really wish people would read entire posts before adding their 2c worth..

I wasn't saying "OMG!! Sapphire make ATI card!!! WTF???"

As you say...that's old news...known that for years..

What I *was* saying, was that it was weird to see a non-ATI branded card say "Built by ATI" in it's BIOS...usually they say "Powered by ATI"..
