Now the Black Box buncle supposedly offered free with the new HD2900xt video card has been cancelled and replaced with an "Orange Box" that includes the original Half-Life 2 full game and Ep1. Problem is the price is $10 more. Will ATI/AMD honor this or make good on the deal somehow?

it doesn't make ANY sense

perhaps some one with patience can explain what they are really saying:
The Black Box is no more. The package, which was to offer Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2, has been officially cancelled by Valve. The Orange Box will be the only collection offered when Episode 2 releases this fall. Priced $10 higher than the Black Box, the Orange Box adds the original Half-Life 2 and HL2: Episode 1.

"The Black Box has been cancelled," said Doug Lombardi, Valve's director of marketing. "We're going to have one package, The Orange Box, available on the PC (US$49.99) as well as the 360 and PS3 (US$ 59.99). In addition to the three new products -- Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Half-Life: Episode Two -- The Orange Box will also contain the full version of Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. Those who purchase the PC version of The Orange Box will get three separate Steam product codes: One for the three new games, one for HL2, and one for Episode One. This way a PC Orange Box owner can give away their Half-Life 2 or Episode One unused Steam product codes if they don't need a copy of those games. We are excited to deliver the highest value of new gaming content ever offered in one box."

so i pay ten dollars more to get something i don't want?
--so i can sell it to someone who also doesn't want it?

sounds reasonable ... to an idiot ... 'Valve in bed with AMD'
--a extra old turd in a box does seem to be the "highest" value they can come up with

OK, i get it now

But then Valve realized no one buys HL2 anymore since everyone who wants it has it by now so they decided they needed to drum up some more sales for it and charge everyone $10 more so they can count more HL2 sales. lol

This should not change anything for HD owners as they just get codes to enter into steam and download the games.

I think they are doing this to force current HL2 owners to buy the game over steam instead of in store. That way valve can charge you full price and not have to pay a distributor or pay the media costs.

Pretty much a total ripoff and screwing their fans out of every dime they can. (I only say this because I bought HL2:EP1 for $10 and was hoping to also find a sale on EP2).

Which is the same thing?

Or are those with the coupon also gonna get screwed when they go to the store?

I'm this doesn't affect the ATI promotion at all. Since it's just a code to download it from Steam then I'm sure Valve can still make a custom sku for the ATI bundle.

They probably just needed to add another product to justify a retail price of $50 and to differentiate it from the ATI bundle.

I see nothing in the article that mentions AMD. Perhaps Valve is not going to offer the Black Box as a separate retail package to the general public, but will continue to include it with the HD2900XT. AMD and Valve must already have a contract in place. I don't see how Valve could change it at this point in time. The article is a bit vague.

Cancelled means cancelled. AMD/ATI were offering to get you the black box for free when it came out. If it never comes out then you're sol unless they get together with valve.

Well $10 isn't much, but again you have to take into account how many cards come with this bundle deal (every one right now).

I was just curious if anyone knew if this changed the bundle. Since it's a code used over steam I would assume that you get each product seperately (1 code per product) and you have to download it. Would I be right to assume that this is the case and you will just download the parts of the original black box bundle? I think so if it is indeed a download and not a in-store retail coupon.

Why does it make more sense to bundle in an expansion instead of a set that includes the original game? Since when has any video card bundled with it an expansion to a game instead of the original game?

Also Valve in league with AMD? People, stop being so paranoid . . .

Also Orange Box is $10 more in retail form than the Black Box (it includes two more games after all) but I doubt that they are going to now add $10 to the HD2900XT price tag . . .

The "Black Box" is nothing more than a collection bundle. All the programs contained within it are going to be released in the "Orange Box" along with HL2 and EP1. Nothing in the "Black Box" bundle itself is being cancelled. So there's no reason AMD can't continue to include it with the HD2900XT.

It sounds to me that Valve simply decided they wanted to make an extra $10 on every package. After all, I would think that most people who will be buying EP2 would already have purchased HL2 and EP1. It might cost Valve a few extra cents to include the installation DVDs in the package, but they're getting an extra $10 in return.

Seems to be a purely financial decision to me.

But, you see the problem is if you activate the single product code and steam says "that product does not exist please try again" or something like that...

I just don't know exactly how it works...does it activate a single product on steam or get you access to the collective pieces?

So after paying 50 dollars for HL2 and ~20 dollars for HL2EP1, a total of 70 dollars, I have to pay another 50 dollars for HL2-EP2?
