Amd/ati was usually first to dump their old cards.

But now they're still selling gcn 1.0, so that's not happened yet.

HD 4000 and 5000 series were supposedly similar, yet had enough differences for AMD to move HD 4000 to Legacy already in 2012.
Once AMD revises its GCN architecture "enough", whether it'll be with Polaris or its successor, GCN 1.x might be put to Legacy

Last driver for HD 5000 and 6000 was Legacy Crimson Beta, though those cards don't seem to have gotten any performance drivers since GCN was released.

Based on AMD's history with driver support, I just don't dare to bet on more than 5-6 years, Legacy support year included, driver support for GCN 1.x

Has anyone seen benchmarks including Fermi and HD 5000-6000 series for DOOM? It's just OpenGL 4.3 so the game should at least start on those series

Prices have fallen quite a bit. XFX R9 390 XXX OC = $280. All 390/390X cards come with Total War Warhammer making it an even better value.

Kepler is going to go down as one of the worst aged NV architectures, right behind FX5000 and GeForce 7 series. What makes it worse this time is 770-780Ti line cost more than AMD's 'equivalent' cards for the majority of that generation.

Right, and it still surprises me when people say they want to pick up a used 980 Ti or whatever once Nvidia releases a new gen/rebrand/ whatever card... Lol.. it's like they are on a different plane than Nvidia's reality; driver prioritization for a few months, and then moving onto the next release... turnover has become important for Nvidia's business model (which is a euphemism for churning customers...lol)

I would do the same if I were Nvidia, if I didn't believe that the market will be there for much longer. But, as a consumer, why in the world would I want to buy a short lived Nvidia card (unless it's an absolute bargain) much less a used one ... Lol . I have quite a few Gk110 and Kepler cards that I could pawn off on some unsuspecting soul without disclosing my reservations regarding Nvidia's driver prioritization business practice, but it just doesn't seem right, if you know what I mean...lol.
By the way, I believe that "poor aging" is the new normal for Nvidia cards, not just Kepler... we shall see how it turns out for Maxwell once new games are released....

I'm not sure that we're going to see the same level of relative lack of performance in Maxwell cards that we saw with Kepler. Pascal is a very similar archetecture to Maxwell, and in my mind the difference is more along the lines of the different versions of GCN.

Given that, and the heat that NV has taken for the perception that they're abandoning their old cards, I expect that Maxwell will do better for longer with Pascal as the new lineup than Kepler did with Maxwell.

Sure would be interesting to see performance of GCN 1.0 when AMD stops selling them after 4 years.

HD7970 was announced on December 22, 2011, with official retail launch on January 9, 2012. Soon this card will be 5 years old. It aged unbelievably well. However, I would expect 1-2 more years of driver support due to later released R9 280/280X cards. If driver support is cut off in late 2017, that's perfectly fine. Already this year it will be possible to buy a discounted 970/390 for $225. For anyone still on a 7970, it should be a cheap upgrade. A better upgrade is probably to step-up to the 1070.

Yep, buying a GCN card was a good idea, sadly the reason was AMD's inability to release new cards. and not some magic idea to support the cards till the end so customers would't want to buy a new GPU.

Would be interesting if AMD released full released full GCN 1.2 series of cards and not just 2 back in 2013..
