Battlefield 2, Eve, and Star Wars Galaxies have all given me a peak commit charge above 1gb.

I've seem my commit charge at 1.7GB with a few apps open just after playing a 64 person server on bf2.

i'm currently running 4x512MB using winxp 64bit No issues.

What kind of Mobo do you have?

PC-DL

That is an Intel board with no on-die memroy controller....He is talking about an AMD64 system...

Try to get with topic...It is the memory controller that does this not the board...Early pre venice Rev E stuf not only cas 2t'd you it also dropped the memory to run at PC2700 speeds

APPLES and ORANGES PPL!!!!

I'm pretty sure you can still run 1T timing with 4 sticks of ram assuming that you have single sided dimms. The means that all 4 of your sticks of ram must only have memory chip on one side of the stick of ram. That means you can run 1T timing with 1-4 banks of memory but any more and you can't.

Now, before you go checking, I bet a lot of you have Corsair Valueselect ram. It has dual sided dimms so you won't be able to run 1T with 4 sticks. Most sticks of ram are dual sided so chances are this won't help you if you have 4 sticks already.

2GB of memory will perform much better than 1GB despite the timing. Maybe if you like to jerk off to benchmarks you'll see a little latency issues but in real worlds performance you'll see nothing but improvements.

Do the 4x512.

I started out building my son's PC using 2X512 OCZ "Gold" versions, and by sheer coincidence, each pair had a bad module. I never even got a chance to OC the memory as a pair. As NewEgg took care of me each time, I just kept "upgrading."
OCZ4001024WV3DC-K
OCZ4001024ELDCGE-K

My son intended to play BF2, and I read Zebo's Memory Latency article enough times that I just gave up on trying for a low-latency OC, and "upgraded" to 4x512 Corsair VS. No regrets. Just plugged it in, set to 2T (and Bank Interleave 'off'), and it was done. (I got tired of OC testing, and the Gold gave off a lot of heat for the small room.)

I recently tried VS 2x512 @1T (& bank interleave on) versus VS 4x512 @2T (& bank interleave off), everything else the same. 2x512 1T was 0.2% faster in 3DMark05 test results on my system. My son played BF2 before I put it back to 4x512. BF2-Online was stuttering and 'lagging'. After 4x512, everything was back to normal, smooth play. ( I ran Task Manager/Performance and made him restart BF2 while 2x512. CPU was pegged. I assume it was swapping page files.)

A younger son is soon to get a system upgrade, so some OCZ Platinum 2x1Gb is on the way. The Platinum is $30 less (AR) than what I paid for the VS on sale 9 months ago. I will try some bmarks to see the difference between 2x1Gb 2-3-2-6 versus 4x512 2.5-3-3-7 at various speeds in the same system.

What is a good bench mark to use for performance testing? All I have is the freeware 3DMark05 tool. Is there a 'standard' BF2 benchmark that does not require a 3rd-party FPS measure?

What effect does bank interleave have on performance...and do you have to turn it off for 4x512?

I must turn off bank interleave to get the system to post. I do not know the performance impact, other than one test, 0.2%, not measuring CPU performance directly. I got the suggestion by surfing www.dfi-street.com. I have never been sure that the DFI employees monitoring the forums know what bank interleave does, either. I have not researched it in 9 months.

Good topic... how do I know I'm running 1T or 2T? I have 4*512MB sticks in a Pentium rig - do Pentiums also have a problem running 4*512 @ 1T or is it just the AMD systems? Thanks!

I think its just the AMD systems axe. One of the draw backs of having the memory controller ondie is that its pickier about ram.

I had nothing but trouble trying to install 4x512. Even after loosening the timings, I still had problems OCing with my 165.

What do you mean by problems and what are your system specs.

Here's a funny thing, I've recently been doing some work on my PC, replacing a northbridge fan and adding a new HDD. I was playing around in the BIOS and I noticed that my AUTO memory settings at some point have switched my 1T timing to 2T! So here I've been running 1GB(2x512) for who knows how long and I'm worried about what slow-down I'm going to see at 4x512. HA! I'll probably never notice the difference now since I have seen any difference between when I was running at 1T and now that I'm running at 2T.

Well, I'm going to switch it back to manual and 1T and then place my order for two more sticks.
