I have an OCZ Goliath heatsink that originally came with a SUPER LOUD 60mm delta fan which kept me 35/42.5c but now i've changed to a much quieter 6000rpm 60mm evercool fan

it's nowhere near as cool with this fan and will sit @ 42/52c on the temps so I got an idea

I removed the evercool fan (5000rpm) from my thermaltake 6CU heatsink and rested it on the side of the heatsink, blowing inward at the fins

THEN I saw an INCREDIBLE decrease in temps, now i'm @ 35.5/42c

howcome more people don't do this?

It's super quiet and doesn't require me to purchase an ultra expensive sink like the mcx462 and a high output 80mm fan

The CPU in use is an AMD AthlonXP 1800+ @ 1.95vcore, 1710mhz (148fsb*11.5) with OCZ Goliath heatsink

so u have a fan sitting loose on your motherboard....blowing air into the side of the heatsink? somehow that doesn't sound very secure

Is it possible that the airflow from that sideways fan is somehow directly cooling the thermistor?

i thought about that but the base on my heatsink is SO tight against the processor and the thermister is trapped underneatht he chip wafer, i don't think that's possible....

I found what you found. IMO a side flow thru a tunnel of fins (with microfins if possible) would be the best option for air cooling, especially if the exhaust were directed straight out of the case. Why don't people do it? I think the companies that make heatsinks don't put a lot of R&D into their products. I did a couple of hours experiment and found what you you did so I must assume that that's a couple of hours that CoolerMaster et al. haven't done. It's difficult to do with current heatsinks because they would need square sides suitable for a 60mm fan. If there were such a heatsink and it had a strong fan blowing thru on one side it would beat the pants off anything else I'd bet.

See my link below. One of my attempts involved using "the mummy" to induce side flow by sealing one end of the heatsink and covering the top of the heatsink all but a 3rd furthest from the open end (if you get my drift). Didn't work overly well but with a little refinement I bet I can get it to work.
