2nd brand-new 19" monitor to display wavy pattern at 1152 x 870 @ 85 Hz...

First, I bought a ViewSonic A90f+. Wasn't happy with image quality, so I returned it and purchased an NEC FE991SB. Both monitors experience wavy patterns at 1152 x 864 @ 85 Hz. Any other resolution/refresh combo works perfectly fine. The wavy pattern is only present at 1152 x 864 @ 85 Hz.

The monitor sits alone atop my desk; there are no lights, radio, or speakers near the unit. I have even tried plugging the monitor directly to the wall outlet, thinking the power bar may be at fault. No dice.

What could cause this?

I'm inclinded to believe that's the culprit as well. Doesn't make sense that two monitors would suffer the same exact issue.

Indeed, especially if higher resolution and refresh rate combinations don't result in the same issue. I can see two similar models becoming jittery at high resolutions or refresh rates, but if it's only at ONE, and not anything higher...Probably the video card, yeah. If you don't want to buy a new one, I'd suggest just running 75 Hz or something. Chances are you can't tell the difference, and most games run in 60 Hz anyway.

vid card, 85hz is nothing. and most games don't run at 60hz. thats just a default, like windows default 640x480, you don't have to use it

ATi tech support is a joke. Anyone have experience with ATi RMA? How long is the process?

video card issue. As far as rma, it depends on where you bought it. Most ATI cards are returned to the reseller you bought it from. It should also be noted that certain resolutions and refresh rates may cause the monitor to emit radio frequency interference. Personally I would not worry about the pattern with that odd ball resolution anyway.

Can I ask why you would even WANT to run an lcd at that rez? Your native should either be 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. I don't know too many games that run at that rez either.

I would say just use the rez that works and ignore the inconsequential fact that an obscure rez at a very high refresh rate doesn't work.

(btw I have had image problems on old lcd's where the refresh rate was set too high...you won't really notice a slightly lowered refresh rate with an lcd anyway)

The monitors he mentioned are CRTs. That NEC991SB is a nice one.

interference, or video card. The interference doesn't have to be coming from OUTSIDE your case, fyi.

The monitor cable may be too long, or you could be getting outside interference, id set up your computer in the kitchen or another room just to eliminate interference as a problem.

I think that occurance is called moire. Check if your monitor has a "Reduce moire" option. Or start investing in monitors that do (ViewSonic has been using it for a while now).

I found this:

Finally, if you choose a less than standard resolution like 1152x864 with a refresh rate above 75Hz, you no longer are using VESA DMT monitor timings, but rather GTF timings. The only DMT timing defined for 1152x864 is for 75Hz refresh. If you chose the monitor's maiximum refresh rate at any resolution, would it use GTF timings?

That depends on the refresh rates that your monitor is capable of. For 1152x864, if the driver determines that your monitor is capable of refresh rates other than 75Hz, the driver will use GTF timings for the other refresh rates. For the 1152x864 resolution, the only VESA DMT monitor timings that are defined are for 75Hz refresh rate.
