I just finished my first build a few days ago, and since on my old PC I had about 5.5 gigs worth of music and other files on there that I need, I figured I could just put the HD from my old pc into my new one and copy all the files over and be done with it. I have a 200gig WD HD that I set to Master and the second is a 20gig Seagate that I set to slave. When I have both installed the PC wont get past detecting the system's ram and it just locks up. Is there a step I'm missing here or what? Thanks a bunch.

Did you format the new drive and partition it?

Copying Operating System files from one drive to another isnt the way to go. If you're into this sort of thing, I suggest you use software like Norton Ghost to create an image. Do this after you complete a fresh install.

Right now, I'd suggest you do a new, clean install of an OS on the new drive, copy all the files you need to the new drive when done, and then format/clean up the old drive to use it as a backup.

I formatted the new drive when I installed it 2 days ago. I'm not trying to copy system files, only music and *cough office xp cough* but since it's about 6 gigs worth of files and all I have is two 700meg CD's left (and no I dont have a dvd burner) I figured I could install the 2nd HD and just copy those files over. I'd still boot off the first cd would just copy the others. Any thing else I could try?

Instead of master/slave setting have you tried CS (cable select) or a combination on one master the other CS or vice versa...

And that would help him copy his OS & programs to his new drive?

I think it would help because you don't understand what I'm asking. All I need to copy off the old HD is music and my office xp file. I'm currently on my new PC and it works fine, but it wont boot when I install the 2nd HD.

Alright, so you aren't attempting to move an installed copy of Office XP over to the new drive? If all you have to do is move the installation files for Office XP over:

Set the old drive as primary master on IDE0

Set the new drive as secondary master on IDE1

Boot to Windows from the old drive, and copy the files you need over to the new drive. Make sure XP sees the drive and is capable of writing to it. You may want to partition it while its installed as Secondary master, before copying your files.

Shut down, install the new drive as primary master on IDE0.

From the looks of it, you may not have the jumpers on the drives installed correctly - following the procedure outlined above should get you in.

The old 20GB drive should have a jumper with three settings on it: warez, pr0n, and MP3. Sounds like you forgot to change it to the warez setting.

Thanks man, but uhhh you're gonna have to walk me through this since I'm a complete n00b when it comes to computers. Now, you're saying that I want to use my old (20gig) as the HD that the PC will boot from? And that I'd copy the files over to the new HD (200gig) which would be the slave.

Oh yea, also seperate question similar topic, when I installed this 200gig HD my PC on reads it as 127gigs, what can I do to get it closer to 200 where it should be? Thanks.

I've noticed sometimes that no matter how you set the jumpers, it will boot from the drive that it wants to. You may never get it to work with the old drive in there. I'd say network them together and move the files that way if you can't figure it out. There are even some usb links that can be had.

Yea, my friend is gonna let me borrow his Hub so I can just link my two PC's together. Now i just need to go out and buy an ethernet card for my old PC.

I've seen those USB links somewhere. Where could I buy one?

WD has 2 Master jumper settings Master with a slave and Master without a slave. Make sure you use the correct one.
