Freakin Vista!

I installed an unformatted SATA 3GB/sec Samsung HDD (OEM from Newegg) in my system as a second drive, no RAID. It is recognized properly by my BIOS, and it shows up in my Device Manager, but it doesn't show up in My Computer to be able to format it or access it at all. It has no drive letter associated with it like D:/. I did not add any jumpers since it is SATA, and my mobo (ASUS P5B-E) is SATA 3 GB/s.

Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated!!

If this is a fresh drive you need to create a partition before it will show in "My computer" to be able to format.

Right click on my computer, go to manage > Disk management and locate the new drive, create your partition from right clicking the drive and following the wizard.

Hope this helps

I have this same problem with a fresh Vista 64 install....

1. Two SATA drives. Bios sees both. Controller set as IDE.
2. After a hardboot, Vista can see the second harddrive. I attempt to format it through diskmanager and it either gets halfway or freezes, but it ultimately drops the harddrive. And it no longer exists.
3. I have the most recent controller drivers.
4. Attempting to use 3rd party formatting software on the OS level also lost the harddrive mid-format.
5. I have changed the cable and the SATA port to eliminate those as possible issues.

My next step was going to try a BIOS level format and see if that would help.

I've googled this and searched the forum. Some people get this solved by formatting in diskmanager, but as I said, I am unable. Some people get new drivers, but I have tried that as well.

This has been my only snag in what was a very pain free vista install.

Usually you will get more exposure by starting a new thread, but ill still give it a go. I would first try running the hard drive manuf diagnostic tools to rule out a failing drive (it doesnt always work but its a start)

After that you may want to check into possible power issues with the drive or replacing the drive entirely. Software issues will not "typically" cause the sort of issue you are having.

I think I had a snag as well with it going halfway thru and sticking using diskmanager. I did a quick format instead of full format and all is well.

It wasn't vista...
USB enclosured the thing and I still couldn't format it in XP. Had a noticable clicking every once in a while.

RMA'd!!!!
Seagate better be nice and quick about it or its WD from now on.
