First, yes it has a built in wireless router.

Next, I have not heard of this brand. Anyone here ever use one of these? $24.99 for a ADSL modem + router with a built in firewall seems low to me. For that fact alone I would question the quality.

Others may be able to give you a little more insight into the quality of this router.

I have a 2wire 2700hg-S. The one you provide the link for is a -B. Not sure what the difference is, but I paid $150 for mine when I purchased DSL from phone company.

It will only work with DSL and it is the best router I have ever used, setup etc.. I have setup about 50 routers in the past and the 2wire is clearly the best. Both for ease of setup and has awesome features for blocking kids, logging etc.

Highly recommend.

So looked around a bit and saw this:

Looks like a great price, but I dont understand if it is a wireless router as well. Will he be able to connect his Wii wirelessly to this router?
You're a RFD'er aren't you?

I got my dad to buy this modem for me because there's a Canada Computers in my hometown but not where I'm living right now. I'll set it up and try it the next time I get home. I plan on using it only as a modem because I already have a router and people out there have had trouble with this thing's routing capabilities.

It's a refurbished item and since it just magically showed up at the store in large quantities, I can only assume that they wholesaled them from some warehouse or directlyvery from 2wire.

Lies! You can't catch deals like these unless you're on RFD or affiliated with RFD in one way or another...

Details on the troubles?

There doesn't seem to be any simple way to use this as a bridged ADSL modem. Good luck though, I'd like to hear if you managed to configure it as a bridge and dynamically assign the WAN IP to the router.

Or from some defunct ISP or one changing their users' modem/routers. It this case, they're from SBC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SBC_Communications

They're used, and come with nothing but the power adapter.

These are not normal retail products, so I think they're a dead end -- you probably won't be able to get support or firmware updates from 2wire.

As they only have a phone plug for input, they can't be used as a standard router. But they might be usable as a WPA-capable wireless access point.

OK, I now see how to get it into bridged mode.

The user guide is here: http://www.2wire.com/?p=266
Page 52 shows how to get into the secret "MDC" -- Management and Diagnostic Console

Which turns out to be as simple as entering this URL: http://gateway.2wire.net/management

And the option is "Enable Routing" under Advanced / Configure Services.

Another interesting feature of this router is the "HyperG" wireless -- you can boost the power output as an option.

There's also a firmware upgrade feature linked to 2wire -- I suppose there's a chance that this router might still be maintained when necessary. It seems to work OK with Vista / IE7, although I haven't done a great deal of testing with it. It is discontinued and apparently replaced by the 2701.

There's lots of material on this on dslreports. E.g.

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/amfaq/2.8_2-Wire_Home_Portal#11608

And some material on AT&T:

http://helpme.att.net/results.php?scriteria=2wire

BTW, it doesn't come with the vertical mount stand, but is big enough to stand up by itself. Moreover, even routers/switches which have vertical-mount stands do occasional back-flips off desks.

Thanks a lot for this research. I've heard of people using this unit as a bridged modem but haven't really looked into it since I don't have it with me right now. When I go home (maybe next weekend) I'll test it out.
