3.2 Prescott overheating 87C

I suspect my 3.2 prescott is overheating and causing spontaneous shutdowns the last two weeks.

Three months ago, I built a new system with a ASUS P4P800SE and Antec 1650 case with 350 watt PS.

It ran fine for a couple of months, and I was able to overclock it 10% with no problems. Slowly, I began having some issues, so I returned the CPU to default settings. Just in the last week, my computer has spontaneously shut down once or twice a day. Once, with no programs running and the screensaver going. An hour ago, after 30 minutes of computer inactivity, I went back to the computer and found ASUS probe was reporting a cpu overheating situation. It reported 87C/188F. I shut down the computer, waited 10 minutes, and restarted. It's now running normally at 53C/127F.

Does anybody have any ideas what I should look for in resolving the problem. I checked the case fan and CPU fan, and they are working. ASUS probe is reporting voltages as OK.

I had the same problem with my P4C 3.0... reported 175 degrees (F), cleaned out the dust with a difluorethane (or it could be tetrafluorethane) blower, runs fine (102 degrees F) now.

I don't know how dust got there so quickly (it might not even be dust).

It could be that your old thermal compound is wearing off (for some reason).

Try getting some Arctic Silver 5 Ceramique (it's about $4 on NewEgg I think) and reapply it. You'll need some 90% or higher Isopropol alcohol, and a q-tip handy to remove the old thermal interface. When you apply the AS5, remember to get the thinnest layer possible.

If THAT doesn't work, then maybe it's time for a new heatsink (I'm going to place an order for the Zalman 7700 AlCu).

We have the same board (almost) by the way. I have an ASUS P4P800e deluxe. So I'll let you know if it fits (but your model is slightly different, so I cannot guarantee that it will fit).

Right now my CPU is fine at 54C/129F.
The MB is 36C/96F.

The CPU was a Retail processor with Intel fan. I can't believ the fan would need replacing after three months, unless it stopped working completely. I do notice some dust collection.

I agree it's rediculous. I can only imagine power spikes from the power supply/MB or a CPU going haywire.

There are times when the computer is being used heavily, and then I am surprised to have problems when there is no activity.

An hour later, and I come back from the whirlpool.

The CPU is at 84C/185F. The MB is at 37C/98F.

I have an nView Desktop manager message that says statusclient is not responding.

I think I'll try uninstalling/disabling nView.

I find that statusclient.exe is in the HP folder.

I've had problems before with their software. I have a HP 1012 and a HP 6540 hooked up.

I guess I'll have to play with /uninstall some of the progs.

I Quit statusclient.exe, had to reboot, and temps are dropping now.

Weird. Your temperature probe is probably messed up... Try getting the latest bios, and tell us what your temps are IN the bios (Record them after 15 minutes of being in the bios so the cpu can heat up a bit).

I haven't heard of nView though. I use MBM5 (MotherBoard Monitor) or ASUS Probe (came with my motherboard software disk) - both work great.

Your system and mine are similiar. I have a P4P800 (BIOS 1019) w/ P4-3.0E and mine idles at 39c and loads to 49c, with a mobo temp of 38c. I'm using a Zalman 7000b AlCu HSF w/AS5.

I had been having a high idle temp close to the load temp and it drove me crazy trying to figure it out. Fortunately, some of our friends here at AT, helped me out. It turns out that I had to do a "R" reinstall of windows and the SP2 update. Somehow, the OS kept things running in the CPU, heating it up, even though Task Mgr. was reporting 0% CPU usage.

You might be on the right track in thinking it might be SW related. You might consider using a spare HDD to do a fresh Windows w/SP2 install running with no other apps and see what happens. Set the BIOS to "Setup Defaults" before installing Windows.

I have to second what the The Pentium Guy said. Have you opened your case to check for dust build-up on your heatsink? A couple of months ago, I noticed my temperatures had been slowly climbing over the course of a few weeks. After I opened up the case and dusted off the heatsink (there actually wasn't a whole lot of dust on it, so I guess it doesn't take much), I got a 10C drop in my cpu temps.

I just started the computer again, after being away for dinner. Now I find that MS AntiSpyware was running at 30% CPU usage and getting the CPU up to 80C after five minutes. I shut down MS AntiSpyware, and five minutes later, its back down to 56C.

Sounds like the CPU is doing loops.

I have another installation of WinXP on another drive. I'll have to boot that up, and see if I have any problems there.

There is some dust, so I will have to blow that out to.

nView is a nvidia desktop manager for multiple displays.

30% cpu usage and 24c swing in temp....Heck I wonder what 2 instances of priem would do for you!!! 100c!!!!

One thing to see if the temps are all bullshit anyways....use throttlewatch and see if the cpu is throttling....At 80c I am sure if it was real it would definitely be throttling for sure...

Hey dude, I actually didn't blow out the dust in my heatsink, I took it out and manually cleaned it with a lintfree cloth (cofee filter, q tip) - worked fine for me. But for the rest of the case I blew the stuff out (on my hard drives for example, there was a lot).

I've found that the Prescott's (at least my 3.4) start to throttle at about 69 C (according to throttlewatch and everest)

I would suggest making sure your case fans are NOT plugged in to fan only connectors. This dropped me about 3-4 C. That has my load temp at 70C (one instance of the Prime95 torture test.)

Next make sure your power leads are neat and not obstructing the air flow. That's on my to do list tonight.

87C for a 3.2 is insanely hot. It should be running at half those temperatures. Are you sure you seated the heatsink correctly?

When I was having a heat problem (P4-3.0E), I contacted Intel support. Although I solved my problem by a SW reinstall, I thought you might find of interest, what Intel sent to me. Maybe you could find something that would be of help.

I agree fully that the latest LGA775 Prescotts run way too hot. Specifically those at 3.4Ghz and above. Intel's non-response to my questions regarding those processors is what started me on the road to a second setup with an A64.

To attack all Prescotts is silly. I have a very well behaved 3.0E on the stock cooler.

This guy's temps appear to be all over the place, so I can't say much about it.

I would redo the HSF installation.
I would certainly use throttlewatch as a test to see just how hot the chip is really getting.
