I'm getting 40-42C idle and 52-56C under load for my 3.4 P4 with intel stock cooling. Is this normal, I thought the load temps were a little high, anyone else able to corroborate?

sounds about right to me. Abit and Asus I belive are about 8-10 degrees high, and my prescott reads 63 @ load oc'd, but I use a good copper heatpipe HSF

Hi. I think the idle temps may be a bit high, but under load it is fine. I think the Northwood 3.4ghz has a default voltage of 1.6v which makes it run hotter at idle I suppose.

I have a 3.2ghz Northwood overclocked to 3.63ghz and it runs about 36c idle and 55c under load. The Northwood processors than go to 75c before overheating though.

I use a Zalman 7000cu heatsink and fan.

Those seem kinda warm but definitely within reason and under Intel's stated specs.

You guys will probably hate me but here is my 3.4 Northwood... well, it's actually an overclocked 3.06 on an Asus P4P800 with an Alpha8942 and a Delta 80cfm fan. Here is it after running for over a day straight and I use this for gaming and everything you can imagine. Pic

Although it is a pain in the butt to install, I highly recommend the Alpha and a high speed fan.

Those temps are fine. The actual temp depends ob the board. For instance, Asus reads low, Abit reads high.

Sorry to disappoint you, but ASUS boards are notorious for under-reporting temps. Add another 10C or 16 degrees F and you'll have your true temps.

Yes that is about right for the stock (yuck) fan. Like someone else said though, add 6°C to your temps. Asus is reading LOW ........... here is link http://www.bleedinedge.com/reviews/abit_asus_temps/abit_asus_temps_01.htm

I would get a different HSF on there. Zalman is good and quiet

42C/56C for a 3.4 are actually good temps with STOCK cooling.

For reference:
my temps on 2.8 oc to 3.4 are 38C/43C with ambient case temp of 31C.
