My CPU now idles at 42 degrees. It's getting closer to the 30's which is where I want to have it. I decided to sell it and just buy a retail Prescott. That way I won't have that tought in the back of my mind of whether it's an ES or not and if it's causing me problems. I don't need an ES if it is one anyways. Thank you all for your help.

A retail Prescott probably won't do much better temp wise. The 600 series runs a bit cooler, I believe, besides being 64bit.

An ES should be worth more.

Keep in mind that even the regular Prescott will be able to use the 14X and 17X multipliers. It switches to the 14X when it gets too hot, and some mobos allow you to just use the lower multiplier anyway if you want.

I wonder if Sandra is just mistaking the dual multipliers for an ES chip?

I would run CPU-Z and WCPUID and see what they say about the chip.

I wouldn't trust Sandra 2004.

OK, I'm having the same problem as "RedUnit".
My 3.6 Prescott is installed in Asus P5AD2-E which has a lot of different overclocking settings. Now, when PC idles, or there is little load, CPU-Z reports that I have P4 3.6, but core is 2800 (200 X 14). Multiplier should be 18 in 3.6.
What's interesting is that when I load Prime95 or game, multiplier jumpes to 18 within a second.

Looks like Asus board underclocks processor when it Idles.....

Also my temps are OK and CPU is not throttling(I checked with Throttlewatch).

Running WCPUID does not list the CPU as an ES. I took a screenshot of CPU-Z & WCPUID side by side but I can't figure out how to insert a picture into this board.
Anyways, I was thinking in getting a retail 630. I hope my Asus P5GDC-Deluxe can support that CPU. I'll have to check the mobo specs. I think a 3.0GHz CPU is good enough, besides my 3.4 keeps running at 2.8 anyways.

You have to link to your image--no inline images allowed here. pics.bbzzdd.com is a popular host for the AnandTech forums. To determine if it's really an ES, you may want to look at the CPU heatspreader.

i have a 3.6 p4 and my idle temp is around 54 and my temp while playing a game is about 76. I have a zalman fan ...i can't overclock more than 5% which SUCKS ASS...i have ocz ram 5400 1.5 gigs of it, i just bought an exhaust fan so hopefully that makes some difference

I have 2 extra 120mm Panaflo case fans. I'm gonna try to put one on the clear side panel of my case blowing in right over the HSF. Hopefully that will help.

The Prescotts are hot, but not THAT hot. Mine maxes out at about 68-69C (with SETI@home pegging both logical processors at 100% load) with the stock Intel LGA775 HSF unit, inside of a Sonata case with only the rear exhaust fan and the PSU fan for airflow. Something is way wrong.

If you CPU-Z screenshot is accurate..your core voltage is WAY too high.it should be closer to 1.38v, 1.559 is too high for a prescott..
EDIT: By the way..the ES means engineering sample, so you should have unlocked multipliers, but you need to lower the core voltage..you also appear to have EM64T enabled as well with that chip..

I don't know why CPU-Z shows my VCore as 1.559. Both PC Probe and AiBooster show the voltage between 1.38 and 1.42

To change the multiplier on BIOS, is the setting to change it "Ratio CMOS Setting"? I can change that value and above that, option "Ratio Actual Value" is set to 14.

EDIT: Nevermind. I found out that's not it.
