Why will I need the Premium?

Are the maps as big as Rising Storm maps?

I think it can be difficult to find servers that don't run the Premium maps. At one point you could join a Premium server and you'd get kicked once it loaded a map you didn't have. I don't know if that's still possible.

Haven't played RO/RS, but some of the BF4 maps are probably 1Km from each team's spawn. Final Stand will have mostly larger maps too I believe.

you may be 1KM away from the enemy, but don't stand still for even a second, you'll get head-shotted by some guy with a sniper rifle and a 40x dialed-in scope.

BF4 make me pine for BF2's cone of fire.

Really liking CS:GO I haven't played any CS title consistently in the last 10yrs. This could be one of my main-stay games. Loved UT3 the past 4-5yrs so this is kind of a nice change. Still waiting for In Country:Vietnam

you could also look into planetside 2 and tribes ascend. not sure if the communities are still big or not.

ps2 has decent sized maps.

Planetside 2 is a good choice for a free game. But I must warn you that the heart of the game is really with team-based play and VOIP communication. If you are not in a squad with someone who has VOIP and does a good job of keeping the squad together, the game is pretty mediocre.

The gun mechanics and feel are definitely better than BF3 or BF4, there is plenty of cone fire, bullet drop/speed, recoil, etc. I may be biased because I now primarily play Red Orchestra 2 for my FPS fix.

The game sucks mang. Well at least for me. Couldn't ever get it to start up right, and when it did it was buggy as hell.

Well it was horribly buggy from fall of 2013 to this last summer or fall or so but now it runs as nice as it did for me in the summer of 2013. Plus with Hossin and continent locking now done now is as good a time as any to try Planetside 2. Hossin has a lot of cover and flying aircraft through the canopies is very hard yet also very fun. Plus my game does not often crash on startup like it did throughout much of this year.

Honestly the game could be nicer and they try to hard to streamline and monetize it but they have balanced their meddling so much that I am still playing. The main thing for this game is that they are one of the few MMO FPS games existing right now.

I am pretty sure that Planetside 2 can be played from Steam. You only need a separate SOE account (free) if you don't want to play through Steam.

PS2 is definitely more hardcore than BF4 or the COD games in gun mechanics.

Insurgency is somewhere between CS:GO and Red Orchestra. Small maps, quick deaths, proper optics (doesn't zoom whole screen), VERY intense firefights.

If you want huuuge maps have a look at Arma 3. From small squad coop to large scale milsim warfare with land/sea/air vehicles.
