Sorry Wooster, thread isn't dead yet, and it looks like someone else just got in on this hot deal too. You'll have to try harder than that to kill it off.

I need more bandwidth but I don't want to pay extra money.

after 4 days, I already used up 4 out of my 5 gigs for the month.

So, I want to register a domain and get email forwarding for multiple addresses. Is there any better deal than $15/year at DirectNic.com mentioned here a couple of weeks ago? Are they reliable? A co-worker just signed up at registerme.com for $20/year, she said they came recommended from another co-worker. I don't need POP accounts or web space, although if they were free I wouldn't say no; my main concern is the name and mail forwarding.

Im a total idiot when it comes to web hosting. So how does this work? I get a domain name and a host, and then they sort of get linked together? What if I want to switch a domain name?

the host is where your files are at. it hold an ip address. when you register your domain you tell it the ip address of your host. then whenever anyone calls your domain, the servers route them to your host. you can change names no problem, you just tell it the ip and change/cancel it from the previous one.

Has anyone used dnbuy to register their domain? They're $8.97 per year and give you free mail forwarding but no web hosting, which I don't really need. Sounds like a great deal! My co-worker did some searching on Google and said people seemed happy with them (other than the fact that the other spammed some newsgroups with phony positive comments).

I haven't used dnbuy but why not use godaddy.com. I've used them and so have many others in this forum. Plus they are 2 cents cheaper.

Godaddy.com charges $12 or something like that for mail forwarding, which is my primary need. That makes it a non-competitor for me. Free web hosting would be nice but I don't have a website now and don't feel a pressing need to have one with my domain. I just want to be able to send mail to bill@mydomain.com and have it follow me if/when I switch ISP's. I actually found another place mentioned on FW that is $8.88 a year and has good comments. Then there's one place for $10 or so which includes a POP account in addition to free mail forwarding.

Now if only one of them could get me rubin.us (already taken by someone not named Rubin!), it would be perfect :-(.

I'm currently on the market for webspace to support the following;

PHP
PERL
MySQL
About 15 GB transfer per month
350 mbs of space
and a handful of email accounts

I've looked over packages from every company mentioned in this thread, but it would seem I need something a touch more custom than what is offered, (or else I end up feeling like I'm over paying for un-needed things like 100 email addresses.) As would be the norm for this particular forum, I need a hot deal -I'm poor.

I'm taking suggestions, I've got about a week to move the current site. :/

Wow, this sounds like a great deal.. however, the only question I have is regarding e commerce.. i plan on accepting credit cards but what is the first step in doing this? Do you have any type of order management s/w system as well?

You'll have much better luck finding the right webhosting service on WebHostingTalk.com

Rob,

I run phpBB on my domain with DixieSys(3.95.com). No problem for me once I figured out how to get the config file writeable on their webserver (just make it writeable before you upload on ftp).

Does the reseller plan from dixie have mailing lists and IMAP? What is the number of email addresses per site? can the end user access the shell?

There seems to be very little information on the website.

Right, that was the one I was referring to earlier.

Yuck. That sounds like an awful lot of work to do (it would appear I would have to transfer the domain to them and change a bunch of settings, after registering it elsewhere) to get the same services I'd get from dnbuy or namecheap for a almost exactly the same price (or slightly cheaper, in the case of namecheap).

About the reseller plans:

Preferably no shell for the end user, if necessary a copy of photo ID and a phone number will need to be passed along to us by the reseller for the person wanting shell.

The only restrictions on the accounts are # of domains, amount of harddrive space, and amount of bandwidth. The other stuff (email accounts etc) are naturally limited by this, if you put too many you'll find your harddrive quota getting tight after a while. Yes the accounts you setup as a reseller are exactly what we setup for our customers, you have the same control panel we do (www.plesk.com for a demo).

Little bit off topic!

Gary (Dixiesys)
I have a site hosted on your server 5, which was running CobaltRaq. What's the big difference between CobaltRaQ and Plesk? Any advantage or disadvantage over each other? Just curious.

I'd also like to know the answer to this question.

How do existing CobaltRaq customers get switched to Plesk, what's the procedure?
