SOHCC, if you have not registered your domain name yet, I'd recommend registering it at 3-95.com. $15 / year puts you on Enom's registry. Change the DNS from Dixiesys to "Our DNS servers" and you will have URL redirection for up to 15 alias' (is that the right term? ex. www.yourdomain.tld, store.yourdomain.tld, home.yourdomain.tld, etc) and EMail redirection for up to 50 EMail addresses (use the "*" to redirect all mail to one address). You still need to send out your mail to your old ISP, just put the new return address in your mail software.

I know that if all you want to do is register, you can get that for under $10, but then it's up to you to figure out where to host your domain. In fact, if all you need is to redirect one EMail address, you might try Gandi.net. For about $10 -$12 (depending on the exchange rate), if you register with them, you can redirect your domain to one location and redirect one EMail address. They are in France, so if you really like to make phone calls to your service providers, that may not work for you.

Good Luck!

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Maybe they had an electrician drop a screwdriver on a massive UPS too? (like we did last friday ARGH I am still finding little bits of corruption on one server).

If the page becomes available it'll surely look a lot better hehe

There is no such thing as unlimited anything.

What you have to ask yourself is "what is the real limit".

I guarantee you if I put a few images on there that proceed to run up several gigs a month in bandwidth they WILL limit you by cancelling your account. There is always a limit.

Tech support via email, that can work.

Think about this.

The ABSOLUTE cheapest dedicated server/colo you can get a month that I've found and BELIEVE ME I have looked, is $99 a month.

How many domains must you put on that server JUST to break even? 100
How many users at $1 a month do you need to make a "living"? If you're in say, Mexico, you could get by on maybe 1000 users for a one man operation.
1000 users - $99 for the server is 901 a month profit assuming you don't spend a dime otherwise.

1000 domains on one server of course, is not really possible (or so I hope).

So 2 servers. 500 domains each. Not my domains.
3 server? 330 domains each, monthly bill of $300 your profit is now $700 a month to support 1000 web sites.

No way.

$50 signup fee? hahaha OK SURE but think about this: WHAT is their modivation to keep you as a customer? Your $1 a month? That's not much motivation.

Just some thoughts. As a rule, I disregard any web host that says "unlimited" anywhere in their description. EVERYTHING has a limit, so why not just tell me the limit so I know where I stand?

Regards,

Just a heads up on 1dollarhosting.com....Stay AWAY FROM THEM! :|

1dollarhosting.com are one of the worst webhosting services out there. I set up a friend's website on their servers since they were looking for something relatively cheap (and at that time this was the best deal I came across). After paying the $62 for one year ($50 for "membership" and $12 for the 12 months), and uploading the site, I soon realized that their service isn't even worth the $62 that you pay. Their main site goes down at least once a month, and your site's uptime is less than 75%. Also, their scripted "customer email support" doesn't work half the time. My main grip is that 1dollarhosting.com has the worst uptime I've dealt with (I've dealt with more than 10 hosting services before), and the fact that the friend's site is just a little personal site with static html and low graphics amount (less than 1.5-2gb per month), and they can't even keep it up half the time.

So just letting you guys know that 1dollarhosting.com is one to stay away from...

However, I think I might be referring a friend (or make another site for myself) and use your hosting Dixiesys. You'll be hearing from me soon, Gary.

If you find a good cheap one you tell me, I'm looking right now myself.

Verio is on www.webhostingtalk.com in the for sale area quoting $250 per 1Mbit that's VERY nice pricing. Gonna look into it.

Currently I use dedicated servers at www.rackshack.net if you need absolutely no support or help running your own linux based web server/email server then it's great, if you need any kind of administrative help, look elsewhere. (if compiling your own apache web server with mysql support and php and SSL built in is beyond you then you'd probably be advised to go elsewhere).

I've been using 3-95 for a few days now. I haven't had any real problems. I had to replace my bchmod()s with %s in PHP for some reason, but other than that, transferring my pages from my friend's host went smoothly.

Every once in a while it'll take a few seconds to start downloading on my DSL box, but it's usually speedy.

Good place. A group of friends of mine have a forum hosted on a dedicated server there, and my website's on it as well. Dont know the specs for sure, but we pay (I think) about $1200-1500/year for the server and all hosting. Downtime is virtually non-existing.

If I rent a server and there is a high overage fee, is there software that shut the site down if it approaches the bandwidth limit?

Say I have a 100GB monthly limit, the software will shut the site down when it estimates the usage to be about 95GB.

Better yet, is there software that can set a daily limit of, say, 3GB, and automatically shut down and restart service accordingly?

Most sites list overage as a feature. I for one can work with a hard limit, but absolutely hate the overage fees.

Thanks.

Most cheap sites bank on overages and extra's to make their premium $$.

But yes, its easy to implement, you can throttle many ways, you can throttle by bandwdith, shutdown after XX bytes (per day/week/month/year), etc.

Nothing terribly complex to do..

But why would you want to cut your nuts off, just let people go over and bill them

I keep close tabs on bandwidth, not because I have many people going over but because for those who do go over I want to let them know well in advance "hey looks like you're gonna use about 8 gigs this month, that's like $6 extra bucks, or if you want, I can throttle it at 5 gigs your choice" that way no one is caught flat footed at the end of the month with an overage bill they didn't count on. If it's a choice between my site being down a couple days at the end of the month or an enormous overage, I might choose the downtime, depending on the site and what I do with it.

Just my take on it.

If anyone is looking for a domain registrar, I can think of 2 good ones based on price, features, and reviews
I've read elsewhere. I currently have my domain registered with easydns.com, for 40$ per year. Its a little
more than Verisign, but gives a great many more features, and permitted me to carry over whatever
remaining time I had with Verisign over (I had a year and a half, so this is really $40 for 2 and a half years).
What I got was DNS-plus service, but you can get the plain vanilla hosting for much cheaper than that. One
other place I heard about, but haven't selected a domain with, is stargate.com (or stargateinc.com). There
price for domain hosting looks to be about 9$ a year, and that includes all, or close to all, of the features
easydns.com gives on the $40 option. Due to the time allowance on a Verisign transfer, and a
recommendation from a friend I went with easydns. But I plan on using stargate for any future domains.
