How secure is this host? I am with Readyhosting right now and I think their service is great but they are clueless about security and send FTP passwords in plain email and have a support page that requests username and password from an insecure site.
I would not consider running an ecommerce site from a shared server, but nevertheless, security is important for any site.

I'm gonna cut and paste some of this thread to keep My biggest worry is becoming a "big company" and the people I hire not giving the same quality of service and respect to my customers that I give myself. I guess that's how most business owners earn the reputation of being slave drivers.

newbie question, but is it possible to register for the domain for a lengthy period under, ie, Godaddy's 10yr program, but use Gary's hosting services?

just spent 30mins searching through usenet (google groups) but mostly just came up with hosting companies' spam

Yes absolutely. Just set your name servers to NS1.DIXIESYS.COM and NS2.DIXIESYS.COM when you register, no muss no fuss

Hopefully the people from this forum alone will let him reach the point he has to make the tough decision of whether to become a "big business."

Hey gary...i tried registering but it told me that there's something wrong with my credit card...
I tried 3 times...I hope I didn't get charged 3 times

Does the name of the account and everything have to be all the same?
(from CC to the accout to the name on the site where u pay)

No there is no data passed other than what plan you select.

I am registering with a new CC processor tonight if I can find the time and should have new payment links online shortly thereafter I've lost more than one signup due to various problems with the current one I've found out lately so it's in my own interests to get a more stable CC processor. Keep an eye out on www.dixiesys.com for a news update about it.

Thanks for your interest sorry for the hassles.

http://forums.dixiesys.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?forum=4&4

Check the post "What are the paths to stuff?" it should get you squared up

Have fun!

<< Gary's response is super fast. thanks!

the administrator's page (cobalt) is not good though.
>>

I am bringing a new server online hopefully tonight. This server uses the Plesk software and is not a Cobalt RaQ.

If you want to move your site to this new server let me know.

This is a little OT, but I noticed a posty by METAPY a while back regarding using a catch-all email address. The link included in the post described using the catch-all to see where your email was snagged from (give rc_microsoft@blah.com to Microsoft and see if you end up with pyramid scheme junk going to that address).

As an extension to that, I was wondering if it would be possible to filter "marked" email like that to a couple of different users

say you have two people using a hostname for email "Jim" and "Bob" (jim@blah.com, bob@blah.com), and they give out the following emails:

jim_slashdot@blah.com
jim_anandtech@blah.com
bob_arstechnica@blah.com
bob_slashdot@blah.com

Would it be difficult to get the mail server to send jim*@blah.com to jim's primary address and bob*@blah.com to bob's address? ("*" being a wildcard)?

Yeah, I know it's ~way~ off topic... think of it as a "bump"...

Thanks,
RC

I wonder if this is the same Dixiesys that auctions hosting on ebay, they seemed to have pretty good rates, like $20/year.

Wow, that's an even better deal! $20/year vs. $48/year! Sure, there's 2 less GB of bandwidth a month, but I haven't even gotten close to 1 GB, much less 5 GB.

How cheap am I, really?
