<< Here's what I want to do:
1) Register a domain for a simple family website.
2) It must include at least 3 POP3 e-mail accounts.

... GoDaddy which would cost me $8.95/year (www domain registration) plus $14.95/year (5 POP3 e-mail accounts with 3MB limits) or StarGateInc.com for only $8.85 but only 1 e-mail account.
>>

Me and about 630,000 other @mediaone.net email addresses have to switch to @attbi.com (and maybe to @comcast.net, if that deal goes through?). So, I've been looking for something similar and have asked Gary to consider it. My motivation comes in search of an inexpensive way to establish a "permanent" email address - I want something that will act as a "catch all" to forward it to whoever is my ISP.

I'd be very happy and pleased to go with Gary if he is interested / able to concoct something suitable.

If not, so far, it looks like I'll go with GoDaddy for $8.95/yr to register a "personal" domain and their $11/yr 1 email w/3MB. But in my case, I intend to enable their "catch all forwarding" feature, so I can have however many email user *names*@mypersonal.com as I want.

Elsewhere, it has been suggested inventing sam.anantech@mypersonal.com and sam.cnn@mypersonal.com and sam.dslreports@mypersonal.com .... on the fly, so to speak, could be a useful way to spot who is selling your email name and to more easily segregate incoming spam.

As for having 3 email "accounts", in addition, - husband@mypersonal.com (john@mypersonal.com), wife@mypersonal.com (jane@mypersonal.com), kid1@mypersonal.com (johnjr@mypersonal.com), .... could also be used and have all of them forwarded to the family's single ISP email account. Wonder if I can "upgrade" to 3 or 5 email names, if they need to be individually forwarded, in the future?

At least, that's my plan, for the moment.

Nekote-I can give you 25 POP e-mails (5 MB each) and unlimited aliases. Controlled via a CP. Register your own domain with Godaddy, and it'll cost you $15 per year, and since we are all AnanTechers, I'll waive the usual setup fee.

Let me know if you are interested.

Have done both - FTP and Web App.

Web App (fileman) is slower.
But better for dealing with file attributes / user access / protection (.htaccess and .htpasswd).

GotComputers - tempting.
Got a web site I can inspect and "kick the tires"?

Maybe you should consider posting your own "Hot Deal"?

i signed up for hosting @ dixiesys.com and have to say i'm pleased w/ the service so far. no complaints. my pages are served up nice and quick. emailed questions are replied to in a timely fashion as well. it's definitely more than worth the 3.95/month. i'm paying 15/month for another site that i host @ hostway.com and have been very happy with the level of service they provide as well. albeit more expensive, their service reflects it. email support questions are generally answered within 15-30 mins or so.

That's exactly why I want my own domain (both website and e-mail) so I have a permanent personal e-mail address which will never change, regardless of where I move to in the world.

The actual hosting page is 99% done, but not live at all yet. We are working out the bugs with the automated signup and billing systems, but I saw your post and since I can do everything manually, I thought I would offer you a solution. There are a couple of sites that are hosted on the same server if you just wanted a demo of its capacity. Fran's Paradise is one such site. (Its a hawaiian condominium site, not what you gutter-thinkers were thinking! <g> )

As for posting my own Hot Deal, I was, frankly, leery of even replying to your post. The rules are pretty clear about not self-promoting, and I wouldn't want this to turn into everyone's personal sales forum. Once the site is live, should someone decide they wanted to brag about me, then who am I to stop them? <g>

Anyone here have a couple meg file at 395 so we can test the speed of it? I for one would like to see the speed I can expect before switching hosts.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, this sounds like a great deal. I'm paying $36 a year for my little 10MB storage subdomain site. Now if I could have 200MB, and do the email alias type thing, I'm sold come April when my current service expires.

If I register at another company (because it's ridicously cheap)---all I have to do is give them the name servers for dixiesys once I'm signed up over there, and email and requests for my website will go over to dixiesys?

Do I have it right?

<< does anybody tried www.powweb.com ?? they support front page and macromedia and streaming audio.. which are the things i want to play around with. Does 3-95 do that? >>

Frontpage 2000 is available for anyone who wants it.

Flash (last I heard) doesn't require anything at all special out of the web server, and is no more "supported" than say, JPG is, as in, it simply downloads a file and what your computer does with it is up to your web browser (plugin).

Now streaming audio/video can be different. If you're gonna put some ra/ram/wav/mp3 files up for download, some people will stream them, some won't, anyone can still hear them. If you're talking putting audio up on a streaming server where everyone can choose things like bitrate and stereo/mono and the server adjusts the audio stream on the fly, then nope, we don't support that (RealServer I think is one) as the load on the CPU just wouldn't be worth $3.95 per month, plus I don't think the servers are free either.

Gary, i think i will be hosting with you as well

i just registered my domain with 7fifty.com and will be setting up my site within a month

what's wierd is i was on rackspace.com's website and all of a sudden a chat window opens with a representative speaking to me

thats pretty freaky seeing as how i didnt even request help, anyways, he pointed me to some other hosts similar to you, but i feel your price is unbeatable based from the responses in this thread

as for the speeds, i recieved some very decent speeds, that movie file that was posted was downloaded at an average of 75k/sec

although that doesn't make my mouth water, i can't complain, so keep in touch with me because you will be hearing from me soon.

im not a web developer, but is there anyway to stream mp3's in a secure manner so that they can't be downloaded?

i dont care if they try to record what they are hearing, but i would like to be ableto stream mp3's if requested, like if i were advertising an album.

I signed up w/3-95.com after downloading the mov file at 300k/sec repeatedly at different times (tried it 3 different times during the day).

I tried registering at www.registerfly.com but the response was "FAILED". I've entered a request asking why, but haven't heard anything yet. I thought they were supposed to be pretty good.

On the other hand, what could have actually made it fail? I seriously doubt someone else was registering the same name(s), and I'm positive the credit card has enough available credit.

I got the web hosting through his Ebay auction. I changed my nameservers this morning. However, I am wanting to publish w/ FrontPage, and that hasn't been set up for me yet.

E-mails were really fast when I was asking about the service, but now that I have paid it is running 4-6 hours at least between answers. I am not saying bad stuff about the service, that is still pretty good, I am just anxious to get my site switched over as now that the nameservers have been changed my URL forwarding is going to stop real soon, and then nothing.

I will post an update once everything is worked out and I can publish my site.
