Gary- thanks for replying. I was wrong for venturing to guess how your web hosting is setup. I hadn't taken the time to look at your website, but now I have - still a bit scarce on information, but I understand you are just starting.

I was in the same situation last september where my domain name expired, but register.com, who I register my domain name with, never bother me afterwards. I think it's best to ask them about it, but if you are lazy like me, then why bother.

Well, if yer interested in good deals from fellow Anandtechers, I offer the lowest one year domain registrations around... I am an authorized reseller of GoDaddy, and I make NO profit on registrations under 5 years... check it out at:

My prices are set at 25 cents less than GoDaddy, and you are actually utlizing GoDaddy for the registration... a pretty good deal methinks.. 7Fifty Domains

For $20/YEAR, I'm giving http://www.techexcell.com a try.

Their DNS record w/GoDaddy says created end of September 2001.

My site is hosted in London, England by http://www.donhost.co.uk .

Obviously, techexcell is a re-seller for donhost.
Just check out site features - essentially identical!

At the moment, techexcell has shutdown user web site's control panel.
And ftp.

Even so, they do have a 30 day guarantee.

I'll see.

We'll that was short and not too sweet!
My guess, techexcell.com isn't quite up to full speed, yet.
And they claimed I was violating their AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) by having CuteFTP.zip on my site.
Boy, was I confused - couldn't find that file on my site - wouldn't have it anyhow - don't like that sort of stuff.

Net: Canceled account

Now trying 3-95.com w/Gary Harris .
So far, pretty nice.

I signed up about 4 hours ago with 3-95.com , with one of my existing domains.

My newly hosted website is live and running, and I've had very quick email responses from them.

Testing the download speed from my site to my home, I max out my 1.5mbps ATT cable.

If you don't mind the limitations of the Cobalt RAQ hosting, $3.95/mo is an excellent deal.

I'm paying $100/mo + $4/GB for being able to colocate a server, with a slower connection, but thats the best deal I could find within 100 miles. But it's also running numerous services that a RAQ doesn't offer.

Yeah the little RaQs are great for what they are. I have 2 right now, though I'm pretty sure these will be my last. It's only slightly more expensive to get an AMD 1Ghz with 512M and you can host a lot more on one of those. I'm gonna get one of them next I believe and offer any existing customers the option to move to the bigger server if they wish.

This might be a stupid question, but these 3.95 accounts come with FTP access correct? Not some web based client, right?

Woohoo! Thanks for the deal! I just registered a domain over at godaddy and signed up at 395. Question: How long does it usually take for the DNS to propagate when you change the name servers over at godaddy?

Godaddy is pretty quick, it's likely working already.

The limit is 5GB/mo, not 1. Unless you are running something pretty damn huge, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just hopped on this deal, f2s is going down and I needed something for my almost non-existant site (I am just about the only visitor). Having my own domain is nice in case I acctually get ambitious and create something. The price was excelent and exactley what I was looking for. Perfect timing and thanks.

<< server full? can't register anymore?

plz let me know, i'd to be in this great deal
>>

Oh no, server #1 is full, server #2 is nearly empty! And it surely needs to be filled up too! So go right ahead and sign up

Overage is $2 per gig (gig) which is about the cheapest overage charge I can remember seeing anywhere (if you see overage charges cheaper send me a link).

I saw an overage policy once that had "Overage is merely 1 CENT per 100KB for overusage" so let's see, that's about 10 cents per MB which is 1024 x 10 cents per Gigabyte so roughly $102.40 per gig overage.

Also, a bit unrelated, but I have a domain with NameZero I use mostly for the email forward. It's expiring in Augest. Will I run into any trouble if I just let it expire and register it with registerfly or godaddy?

Personally, I suggest you perform a "transfer" over to registerfly or godaddy before the expiration date if you can do this. It should cost the same, well, in fact, it's cheaper if you transfer over to registerfly ($7.99) versus registering it ($8.99) the last time I did this. The reason you may not want to let it expired (and then re-register) is that I've seen Namezero holding on to domains that have already expired for over six months (and counting), and while they are doing this, you will not be able to re-register it anywhere else.

Okay, now we got all of us anna techers on the web. I know we cannot say the site names because that is self promotion, but what if we tag our signatures with our web addresses??? I would like to see what you guys are doing with your web pages.

Dixiesys is great. After reading the inputs of all you guys in the forum, I decided on hosting a site with Gary yesterday.
Paid though Paypal, and got an email this morning with all the info about my account.

I've sent a few mail to Gary with questions, and his responses have been really prompt!

Thanks guys for all the good analysis you do to help other..long live community!

I think AT should have a motto like...." Interdependance, Learning and Acting for a Shared Future"

All the best Gary..

But doesn't NameZero charge to transfer too?

I don't have a domain with NameZero so I can't say for sure, but I haven't heard of any registrar charging you for transferring away from them [*]. Either way, make sure your current registrar does not have a "lock" on your domain before performing the transfer. At best, this may delay your transfer quite a bit, and at worse, it may cause your transfer to fail completely (in which case registerfly.com would still charge you for the transfer fee even though it didn't complete!).

[*] Now that I've thought about it for a bit, I don't see how NameZero could charge you for the transfer since it's the other/new registrar that is carrying out the process. What NameZero could do though is not cooperating with the new registrar (perhaps by refusing to remove your domain lock, if any), and thereby holding your domain hostage, but this is the worst-case scenario. I'm not a registrar and don't play one on the Hot Deals Forum, so YMMV.

I hate to ask this question here, but I need some help. I don't have the need for web hosting now. All I want is to register my domain name. Having it point to my static IP for web server (www.abcd.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and forward/send email to/from my ISP email using my domain (me@abcd.com). Any recommended sites ?
