The chlorine in the water is enough to kill damn near any bug. Microbal contamination is virtually impossible with a functioning system.

I don't mean to sound silly or stupid, but should we be worried about this? I drink only bottled water anyway (spoiled), but I used water from the tap to cook with. Should I not?

<< Besides--my PUR water filter will surely filter out anthrax, cyanide and any other poison, right? >>

LOL Jzero, you could be able to provide "pure" Kool-Aid to all those religious cult nuts....

Call it, Jzero's PUR Goodness, or something like that....

Arent you guys tired of hearing the US govt tell its citizens that a bio and chem terrorism is unlikely and very hard to do?
I understand they are doing this to give the people a false sense of security since America or any other country is not prepared to handle such a threat.

I kind of think that the govt keeps on saying these things not only to appease the masses but to try to make the terrorist think that this is hard to do.

I think it is safe to assume that we will be hit by some form of chem or bio terrorism act soon. and contrary to what the govt says it is feasble and easy to do. I have co worker (physician ex special forces) who describes how easy it is to make sarin with plain old nailpolish remover, cheesecloth and commertcially availble products. And you dont need fancy laboratories to make them too.

The fact that anthrax recently killed that guy proves this point. This was a terrorist attack no question about it.

Dont mean to scare anyone or cause hysteria but people should know that it will and has happened in our native soil

God...that's some scary, Macguyver $h!t...you can make sarin just like that? Well then, hook this Colonel up with that secret recipe, and I'm not referencing 11 herbs and spices

no, because it's better than mass hysteria and general panic, which is what you will get if they say anything else.

I kind of think that the govt keeps on saying these things not only to appease the masses but to try to make the terrorist think that this is hard to do.

then stfu, you're ruining it!

The terrorists know if its hard or not. Since I have no power I'd like to feel its hard to do

Thats interesting...someone broke into a water district truck earlier this week (reported on kcbs.com) in the east bay and stole tools for operating water supply valves and, more importantly, a non-public map of the valves locations.

For those that think it's difficult to contaminate a water supply, consider this:

Botulism Toxin is lethal at a dose of 1ppb (part per billion). A testtube of Botulism Toxin can kill everyone who drinks from a million gallon tank of water (typical water supply size storage tank). Imagine the damage that could be done with a gallon jug of Toxin.

No instances of waterborne botulism have ever been reported.42, 49, 50 Although the potency of botulinum toxin has led to speculation that it might be used to contaminate a municipal water supply, this scenario is unlikely for at least 2 reasons. First, botulinum toxin is rapidly inactivated by standard potable water treatments (eg, chlorination, aeration). Second, because of the slow turnover time of large-capacity reservoirs, a comparably large (and technically difficult to produce and deliver) inoculum of botulinum toxin would be needed.53 In contrast with treated water, botulinum toxin may be stable for several days in untreated water or beverages. Hence, such items should be investigated in a botulism outbreak if no other vehicle for toxin can be identified.

<< It is hard to contaminate the water supply, especially one as large as what New York/New York City would have. It would get too dilluted unless they dropped a lot of crap into it, and I do mean a lot. >>

The town i'm from borders nyc water supply, its huge and you're right a lot of crap would have to be dumped in, but, the last time i was home there really wasn't that much security around there, its a very big resovoir and there aren't enough DEP to patrol it

Cerebus Pu hit it on the head.

Botulism by definition is being exposed to the neuro toxin produced by the bacteria, not the bacteria itself which is easily neutralized by an acidic environment, and since Chlorine is an acid, treating the water supply with CH3 (I think thats the abreviation) would do away with the bacteria itself.

The real threat is "botulinum toxin"

"Botulinum toxin attacks nerve endings, permanently damaging them. It can't cross the barrier that protects the brain. The heart has its own wiring system and also isn't affected. However, botulin can affect all the other nerves of the body, including the nerves of the muscles that operate the lungs. Botulin toxin kills by shutting down breathing. "

"Unfortunately, these bacteria secrete a neurotoxin (nerve poison) so deadly that a few billionths of a gram could kill you. This is botulin toxin, one of the most dangerous substances known. Botulism is the condition of having been poisoned with botulin toxin."

Heres an interesting read on how difficult it would be to use Botulism as a Bio Warfare Agent

Yes and even more difficult in a municipal water supply.

The middle east society cuts off both hands and feet for stealing, some of us say it a good thing but isn't that a little extreme? Their religious sucks, their society sucks. How barbaric. Husband kill wifes or wife kill husband over a little dispute. So instead of divorce, they take revenge on each other? sick sick society, just wanna make me puke. I see why they didn't have a prob commiting all these evil acts, it in their gene, it runs deep down into their root that they would do really bad thing out of little things and they are the most religious people in the world too and show that it does more harm then good.

<< WTF?
How many friggin terrorists are there?

We had a couple of guys arrested for video taping the Port of Tampa, which has a lot of hazardous materials entering on a regular basis.

They had expired Visas, so they are being held for questioning. Apparently, they couldn't come up with a real good reason for video taping the area. It sure isn't because it is very picturesque! It is a very ugly port, not somthing I would want a video of.

These people are among us. The best thing we can do is keep our eyes open and know our neighbors. In terrorist school, they are taught to move into neighborhoods where no one knows each other. It is NOT TOO late to get to know your neighbors!

At the very least, by getting to know your neighbors, maybe you will make some new friends.

Most of these guys can't be held very long, unless strong evidence points towards them being a Terrorist threat.

I live in the middle of BFE with my own drilled well, also with an oil-fired furnace (oil tank in my basement). The only thing "municipal" is my electric .
