Nope, just someone who believes that cops are no different than the rest of society - in every job, there are some employees who are jerks no matter what, and there are others who honestly believe in doing their job right.

That, and I work at the U of M Dept. of Public Safety.

actually most police I've met are cocky asshats that parade around in there cool crown victoria thinkin they are hot sh!t and should pullover and harass anyone they like. They are typically the kid no one liked in school and they are typically not very smart so they love to abuse there power and harass people to make up for being harassed when they were younger. I grew up in a virtually crimeless town(population: aprox 25,000) in suburban neighborhood and we had more cops than was ever necessary. They were bored so they would come up with reasons to pull you over or harass you. That is BS and should not be taken lightly. If a cop is bored he isnt needed so then cut the staff and save the tax payers some money.

typically not very smart? maybe in your neck of the woods but in my town you have to have a BS before you can apply for a cop job. Its so competive around here for cop jobs there is a waiting list and many of the applicants have Masters. I would say that in my town the cops are probably smarter than you.

I can assure you that your town is the minority in this regard. But god bless anyone willing to spend a rediculous amount of money just to be a cop.

Methinks you're bitter b/c you get pulled over for doing something stupid like not using a turn signal.

It's the law to use a turn signal. If you use one, a cop won't pull you over for it.

I have no problem with getting pulled over if I am breaking the law. I do have a problem with getting stopped while walking with a black friend and I do have a problem with cops feeling they can interrogate me b4 they arrest me.

the order goes

arrest me

then interoggate me

not the other way around
You don't have to answer their questions. It's called Miranda vs. Arizona. Stop acting like cops are your worst enemies. They're doing their jobs, and you obviously aren't doing yours as an American citizen (i.e. knowing your rights when being interrogated).

lol pwned!
I don't think gigapet really understands the difference between asking a few questions and a real police interrogation. Especially since he can't even spell the word correctly.

I do know my rights which is why any encounters I have had with police usually involve me saying arrest me or let me go. And the cops knowing they have no purpose harassing me..... let me go.
So why do you have a problem with the cops? They question you, you know your rights, they let you go. What's the deal with your anger? They're not doing anything illegal. It's not like you suffered because of it.

One thing I kind of understand with Police is that on a Daily base they only have issues with is the scum of there community, so when it comes around to dealing with a decent person they are pre-judged as someone who needs a club to the head. lol

"plee"ing the fifth is the act of not stating any information which might incriminate you, and is most often used by witnesses in a court of law. It has ZERO relevance on the road when you're pulled over for a traffic offense.

Ylen13's comment is one of the most idiotic I've read in awhile.

well why could he not use the 5th when they question him about the winter cout, he didn't have to tell them anytyhing. All he was obligated to tell them is his name, his address and give them driving licences, registration and insurance

so you are saying that all cops are dumb? hahahaa ya right!

and maybe your town didn't have crime BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY COPS IN YOUR TOWN. DUH! HAHAHAHAHHAHA

I said typically they are not very smart.

And i like to think there is little crime in the town because the residents are mature and intelligent enough to understand the basic concepts of being, curteous , kind and respectful of each other and each others property.

i've made it through life so far without ever needing there help with exception of asking for directions but they were not any more helpful than a civilian. As far as I can remember I can say that I've only had negative interactions with them and I cannot really see ever needing a highway cop. The more I think about it the more it seems that I'd only ever have a need for police if it was a detective and I needed an investigation into a family related matter. granted the cops were a little sh1ttier with you than they should have been, but otherwise it was pretty typical...

Similar thing happened to me once about 12 years ago. My son was just born like a month before. I was driving a POS 73 Pinto that had a really cheezy black paintjob with my wife and son in the car. It was Christmas Eve and we were coming home from my mom's.

Cop pulled me over, and sat there for 15min with all the lights on me. I guess he was waiting for backup, because once 3 (!) more cars got there they all walked up and surrounded the car, with weapons drawn but down. Obviously my wife and I were freaking out.

As soon as the first one got up to the side of the car (6 ft away) he starts busting up laughing. The other cops gave him the finger and took off. He finally stops laughing and apologizes profusely.

It seems that a pair of black men had robbed a store at gunpoint a block away. They had driven off in a black Pinto. But I'm a VERY white boy. So once the cops got a look at me it was obvious I had nothing to do with it.

He felt bad and asked if there was anything he could do to help make up for it. I said if my son was older, I'd let the cop take him for a cruise in the patrol car, but otherwise.... Just let me go home.

Using the fifth amendment gives him the right to not be questioned about things that could be used against him in court. It's basically the same thing as the Miranda Rights: "You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

However, those rights are only read after you're under arrest. If you refuse to answer an officer's question before an arrest, then he or she will have probable cause that there's a crime related to the items and will search the car and often will call for a K-9 unit to respond.

If you have nothing to hide, it's a lot easier to answer the question, unless you want to get arrested for something the officer may find in the car.

The reason officers pull in behind you and drive for a while with no overheads on is so they can do what's typically called a "rolling 10-28" which is a license and registration check through NCIC prior to stopping you. This lets them know right up front what they're dealing with. Sometimes, during certain times of the day and/or night, NCIC is updated with new information so it can be unavailable to officers on stops. Also, they may be waiting for a good, safe location for you and them to pull you over. Every place on the road is not safe and a few officers a year are killed by traffic hitting them while they're on a traffic stop. So see, they are not simply being jackasses and pissing you off. Would you simply walk up on a car you pulled over not knowing who was in there and what they've done in the past? Especially at night? I think not.

Here's Rogue's recommendations for dealing with officers on a traffic stop. First, keep your hands visible, preferably on the wheel or even on the outside of the door. Second, if it's dark out, turn on your dome light for them so they can see into your car better. This may negate them having to put their full compliment of lighting on you. Third, if they do put all their spot lights on you, it's to assist in obscuring your view of them as they approach their car, etc. Makes it hard for you to get a bead on them and get a clean shot off at them. Fourth, be polite and be calm and don't make any quick movements. Ask before opening glove boxes, reaching under seats, etc as these can be very dangerous places as far as a cop is concerned. Fifth, DO NOT give an excuse or even admit to the offense you "think" you've been pulled over for unless specifically asked. Even then, simply state the most obvious possible offense you "may" have committed and leave it at that. Giving a cop too much information amounts to additional guilt and/or possible other offenses that you committed, leaving them to wonder if this was an isolated incident. Finally and most importantly, just be polite and courteous.

GREAT advice. That's exactly what I hear on the radio when I'm doing campus patrols at DPS - "One-Adam-Twenty-Three, copy a rolling 10-22 (that's the 10-code they use in our dept. for a license)." The rolling 22s usually happen late at night, and often the officers let dispatch know that the car is occupied four or more times.

It's a safety issue. I'm not sure if that's what the cop was doing to Busie23, but it's possible.

When I lived in NJ, I was getting stop by the cops so often that when one started tailing me I would just pull over. Once I got stopped for doing 54 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Now I live in CT. Once my car had stalled on the highway in CT and a Good Samaritan stopped and called the police for me. I started to be concerned because I had lost my wallet the day before and I did not have any identification. The NJ cops probably would have arrested me for not having id and people tend to get beat up or shot while they are in their custody.

Well, the CT state trooper came, asked me if I was alright, called for a tow truck, lit safety flairs, and said he would stick around until the truck came. Oh yeah he called me sir!

I told a friend about how amazed I was by the treatment I received from the cops. He said "You are not in New Jersey anymore.".

If someone breaks into your house to kill/rob you and you dial 911, who do you think gets there first???? A detective? Hell no, a town cop does to save your ass. So keep on with the hate. I hope you never need them. Maybe if you actually needed them and they helped you, it might change your opinion of them. But I doubt it. You are too blinded by ignorance and hate.

I told a friend about how amazed I was by the treatment I received from the cops. He said "You are not in New Jersey anymore.".

You really lucked out, CT statey's are some of the worst around. I'm sure the situation would have been different had your encounter been spawned by driving above the speed limit or a tail light out.

fvcking pigs....fvck the police

Until you need them right.........asshat

i've made it through life so far without ever needing there help with exception of asking for directions but they were not any more helpful than a civilian. As far as I can remember I can say that I've only had negative interactions with them and I cannot really see ever needing a highway cop. I have AAA and they can do whatever it is I'd need a highway cop to do. The more I think about it the more it seems that I'd only ever have a need for police if it was a detective and I needed an investigation into a family related matter. So other than that I'll stick to my statement and say fvck the police.
That may be , so far. Here's hoping life doesn't take any unexpected turns on you.
In my life, the cops were responsible for investigating and arresting the assholes who invaded my Grandfather's house, beat and robbed him, which led to his heart attack and death. That makes it murder.
The main a$$hole has died in prison (AIDS), and the other's are still in jail. 2 women and 2 men, well, 1 now.
The youngest was just 18 at the time (1993).
Cops aren't always the oppressors.

tool box read my post again. I specifically stated I can only forsee needing a detective for investigation into a family related matter. Now you look stupid cuz you didnt want to read my entire post.

So basically you are saying cops suck and you hate them except if you need them. Real smart......I will again stick with my comment......asshat.

a forensics expert and detective do not fall into the same category as highway cop and town cop.
I stick with my original comment.......toolbox

If someone breaks into your house to kill/rob you and you dial 911, who do you think gets there first???? A detective? Hell no, a town cop does to save your ass. So keep on with the hate. I hope you never need them. Maybe if you actually needed them and they helped you, it might change your opinion of them. But I doubt it. You are too blinded by ignorance and hate.

Some people call 911 I call Smith & Wesson

When I lived in NJ, I was getting stop by the cops so often that when one started tailing me I would just pull over. Once I got stopped for doing 54 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Now I live in CT. Once my car had stalled on the highway in CT and a Good Samaritan stopped and called the police for me. I started to be concerned because I had lost my wallet the day before and I did not have any identification. The NJ cops probably would have arrested me for not having id and people tend to get beat up or shot while they are in their custody.

Those are both ticketable offenses. What the hell kind of point are you trying to make here? Of course it would have been different; Heartless Slick J would most likely have gotten a ticket.

You are amazing. I am a gun owner myself. I have it for protection but I would not use my weapon until I deemed it unavoidable. You want to be John Wayne or something. I don't know one responsible gun owner that think they will just take care of whatever situation they find themselves in with a gun. I will never take using my gun on another human being lightly. Of course if I am cornered by a attacker, he will get bullets straight at the head.

My gun will hopefully protect me as a last line of defense. Hopefully the police will show up before I ever have to use it.

Of course you dealing will follow this. A criminal breaks into your house. Instead of calling the police you try to be Clint Eastwood. You get your ass shot and the cirminal gets away. All because you are such a man that you don't need the police.
