3 gig cpu socket 478 or 775 ?

just building another machine and can't figure if its worth it to go 775 socket if they just going to change it again next year with dual cores etc. This machine is a p4 box for gaming no overclocking.

Intel will be using 775 for their dual core procs. You should be able to just pop it in without any mobo modifications. At least thats what they are promising...

that would be the logical thinking but they are changing the fsb to 1066 which means a new mobo and memory probably not sure any more thoughts on this ?

i just cant think that intel would let you get away with getting a mobo and being able to change to a new processor without making a killing on us, i like intel but i know their thinking, nothings' free LOL

If youre making a gaming machine, then trash the Intel and whip out the AMD. Preferably get the Socket 939 AMD 64 3000+ (90 nm)($200). Also, if you wanna use it for gaming, wait a bit for some Nforce4 SLI boards($200) to come out. Then stick in a PCI-E 6600GT($200), and youre good to go! Not to mention that in the future when the Unreal 3 engine comes out you can easily upgrade to two 6600GTs(or even get better PCI-E cards) and still be running along with the rest of the pack. Also, you probably wont have to change motherboards for the next ~4 years.

All terrific suggestions. Only problem is, he asked whether he should buy socket 478 or 775.

If you're going to be buying a PCI-Express video card, then 775 is your only option.
