The more I thought about this deal, and after speaking to 2 Telocity reps, I decided it was a good deal after all.
Yeah, $30 for RealPlayer 8 (and you have to be careful cause Real tries to sneak some other crap into your order that is another $30, but you can delete that crap from your "cart". $25 to ship the modem and you have to pay $10 each for 2 of the 3 months for some other Real Gold crap. So, I will be out of pocket $75 for 3 months of DSL. I don't know anywhere else you can use DSL for 3 months for $75. There is no contract, but you do not own the modem. So after 89 days, I will call and cancel, returning the modem will be $5. The external modem works either with an ethernet card or if you have USB ports, you don't need the ethernet card. Comparing this to the Verizon service available where I live, you get 1 month free and if you cancel and return the modem, you have spent only what it cost to return the modem. But they do require a one year contract (with the first month free), so if you kept it for more than 30 days, say 3 months, like the Telocity deal, you would be paying 0$ first month, $40 each for months 2 and 3, and $99 for the modem (they will not take it back after the first 30 days). So for my $75, I am going to go with Telocity. By the way, this is for 640K download speed. If you live close enough to the CO some companies can provide up to 7 Meg download (for $190 a month).
Perhaps this is not a smokin hot deal, but it ain't bad either. After I have tried it for 3 months, I might be willing to spend $40 on DSL. Telocity is betting that people will be so hooked after 3 months that they won't cancel. Verizon only gives you 30 days to get hooked.
If this thread is still alive, I will try to update on how it goes. My email this morning had my order confirmation and said that things should start cooking in 6-10 business days with modem delivery about a week after that. Then you have 10 days to hook it up and get started.
