keep in mind dslreports usually doesn't show minirams. My connection was listed at 144 idsl, but guess what I peak over 1500 sometimes

Anyone else experience this?:

I swear when I looked at Telocity this weekend they advertised 1.5 Mbps download, 128 Kbps upload (although I have no proof)

I signed up on the phone but now it shows 784 Kbps download, 392 Kbps upload.

The whole purpose to signing up with the faster download speeds (than my Qwest DSL: 784/256Kps).

I was about to sign up with Telocity, but yesterday I received an unsolicited promotional email offering a free MP3 player for joining. I won't deal with spammers. You say Qwest offers DSL?

I have Qwest DSL here at the office. It's not that great, but in all honesty, after the first months of headaches, we haven't had any problems or major blackouts in the last year. At home I had PhoenixDSL which was bought out by Megapaths in the fall of 2000 (megapath is the highest form of suck) who sold my line to Telocity. I got a mailer saying that it should be done by January 2001, but in Jan. my CC was cancelled by my bank due to the Egghead hacking, my line was turned off for lack of payment because there is no way to contact anybody at Megapath to update the number, so for the last couple of weeks I have been without a net connection at home. I called Telocity to see how long it would take if I just set up a new account, and they said 10-12 weeks, dslreports.com user reviews says expect much longer than that. I might do it anyways, just to get on a list as I don't expect my line to be transferred. As for the modem Telocity sends you, it's proprietary and won't work with any other network. Anyways, the moral of this story, utilize DSLreports.com it is a good reference.

I have to admit I have not read a lot of good reviews of Telocity but 3 months of DSL with not contract for $25-55 seems like a really good deal.

I'm looking into this deal now. Just wanted to say that it probably isn't months 1,2, and 3 that are free. My guess is 1,6, and 12 or 3,6, and 9.

I was going to sign up with 2 months free (months 6 and 12) but this offer would obviously be better. Just waiting to see if I need to get a GoldPass ID to finalize the order. The CSR is going to call me back, she is having computer problems.

How about the "Connect and Protect Upgrade" for $9.95/mo? Is there any point to doing that?
I am considering it so I can connect a few computers to the line at the same time.

You could always buy a router and do the same thing (unless you need several static IPs for, say VPN access)

Does the Speedstream ADSL USB modem (purchased on e*ay for use with Winfire, which was supposed to begin service but then cancelled) work with Telocity? Will Telocity allow: not paying the $24.95 shipping for their proprietery modem?

Telocity will not let you use any modem/router for the initial connection other than theirs. I would imagine you can use one machine with ICS set up and 2 nics into a hub/switch if you don't need separate IP's for each machine.

Wrong... A co-worker is running Telocity on a Netgear RT314 switch, no problems.

---

This is in reference to the router part of your statement, I don't disagree that Telocity requires you to use a proprietary modem.

Don't forget, this is NOT "First three months free", this is "Three months free" and you have to be a GoldPass memeber.

sorry for what appears to be a crappy deal I am on hold with telocity right now, I am threatening to cancel my order becasue this is crap... nowhere does it say that it is months 1-6-12 or whatever it is in any of the promotional info, totally misleading.

I'm trying to get DSL and this is the best offer I see right now... It's only a bad deal if you planned on lying about being a goldpass member and signing up with the intention of cancelling after 3 months. I agree that they should make it clear but it isn't worth the setup hastle to get it installed and cancel after three months.

Just FYI - OMG190 gets you 1 year of USENETSERVER.com access - 12.5 Gigs per month which is worth $150 - if you need it!

anyone confirm whether you need to continue to be a gold member for the duration? I was thinking of cancelling if you do, and telocity has confirmed it is months 1-6-and 12 I asked them if they could provide me with one page on their site or reals that mentions this and they couldn't. Crappy company if you ask me, I am thinking of taking the free month and quitting just to spite them.

My guess is that you just need the promo code. I tracked the code down to TMG100 and called 888-357-0553 to order service. There is a 4 to 6 week wait and the CSR said that installation has been in that timeframe (at least in my area).

First it was $30 for RealPlayer Plus to get 3 months free DSL. Then you had to add 2 months of some other Real Gold crap at $10 month. Up to $50 now. Then you find out Telocity charges $25 to ship the modem. Now it is up to $75 for 3 months. Then you find out that the free months are months 1, 6, and 12. Even for the first month it is not worth $25 to ship the modem even if you can get around all the RealPlayer crap.

Cancelled the whole thing today.

If I want a free month of DSL, Verizon lets you try it for 30 days and if you cancel within the 30 days you are out nothing but returning the modem to them.

If you want to keep it, your first month is free, the modem is free and you get a cheap digital camera Then $40 a month with a one year contract. If you cancel before the 12 month, you pay them $99 for the modem. So with the first month free (whether you cancel within 30 days or agree to a 1 year contract) for 12 months it would be $36.67 for the 12 months.

Telocity is suck.

ccity,

it's not worth it to sign up velocity dsl service.
I was told it would take less than 6 weeks to set up,
turned out i got to wait another 4-6 weeks after 5 weeks
waiting. it is a crappy company...

I've got Telocity. I got in on it a year ago here in Chicago when they did their first market test. 784k SDSL (784k up and down). It is sweet, some problems, their mail server sucks so I run my own (they let you run servers) but otherwise good stuff.

What is the deal with people having problems with dslreports.com? It is back to normal. Maybe their host had some problems? Anyway, it isn't porn, it is DSL reports! Wonder what went wrong there...

Just wanted to say that I did this deal awhile ago.

Signed up on Jan 18, clicking through the ad on real.com; I did not purchase player plus. The install went smoothly, and I went live with a Northpoint provided SDSL line on Feb 23 (my birthday, as it so happens). I live in chicago, and Northpoint is what my neighborhood gets. I see people in chi.internet bitching and moaning about Telocity, but most of them live in the northern suburbs and have lines provided by Rythms.

Kinda funny that the people in yuppie starbuckland not only have higher rents, but poorer DSL service than I do in my low-rent working class neighborhood

The line pretty much tests out at 800/800 and has been trouble-free (knock knock).

I share the connection amongst my computers with an e-smith gateway machine.

So if you live in Pilsen (60608) I'd certainly recommend it. One of the peopel on the chi.internet newsgroup likes to boast about his Prime Cable service and how he gets a whopping 200kbs down. He's practically my neighbor, and it seems pretty clear to me that he got the worse deal.
