Again this thread should be "Name three bands you don't like". I think Lord Noob has one of the only good list in this thread...Creed, Limp Bizkit, and Nickleback. I also remember Ms. Spears was mentioned. Those are overrated. U2, Metallica, DMB...not overrated.

they created grunge angst...that's why they were groundbreaking. they are A-typical in that way.

1. AC/DC: They rock, and I like them......but all their songs sound alike.

2. Rolling Stones

3. Dave Matthew's Band

The Rolling Stones
The Doors
KISS

I think all 3 bands are popular more because of the attitude of their members than their music.

I disagree strongly. In order to be overrated they have to be rated highly. Who rates those bands highly? U2, DMB, those are all highly rated bands in certain circles. U2 won a bunch of grammies and what not.

Heh.. KISS was never about good music (though they might disagree), so I wouldn't call them overrated. The Stones, however... I agree with you there.

I guess when the other new music is done by Crappers, Diarhea Carey and her clones and talentless fscks like Sean Paul the Alternative genre comes across fairly well.

True that. But it still follows Sturgeon's Law.

I would say Nirvana is special because of their sound, lyrics, and melody. When i hear one of their songs on the radio, I turn it up because it sounds good, not because of the genre or that Cobain is dead.

One reason DMB is highly rated is because they are very talented. U2's recent works might be overrated but the band isn't overall. The same could be said for Metallica. While Nirvana's music is pretty much crap and Kurt could be considered an overrated guitarist, the band was responsible for getting that style mainstream contributing to the success of many other bands.

Talent means jack if you don't do something with it. DMB streams out the same crap over and over again to throngs of fans who for some reason worship at his altar. Metallica went down some sort of absurd path of suck and hasn't recovered. Their best work in a long time was the documentary about them.

Your argument appears to be that we should list bands that are attributed with greatness because they were in the right time and the right place? Doesn't that also necessarily suppose that you do not like them where other people do? Thus it's no different for you to say that "nirvana's music is pretty much crap" and me to say that DMB's music is pretty much crap.

I don't like Nirvana's music but I don't think they are overrated. People (including you) say a band like U2 or Metallica used to be good but they are no good now. That's because they have changed and their music has changed with them. However, you refer to DMB as putting out the same old thing. It's a two sided argument.

I'm not a fan of most of those bands anymore but I still think they are great and deserve the acclaim they have achieved.

Metallica was pretty awesome back in the late 80s/early 90s. They kind of lost their edge.

For Nirvana....they were pretty good when they started out. Their musical talent was pretty awesome considering Kurt was a decent front man, but their real talent was Grohl....he is an AMAZINGLY smart guy as well as a great musician. He was probably a big part of their success though Kurt gets all the credit because he's dead.

It's hard to reply to this thread because a band's popularity fluctuates depending on who else finally comes out with a record that steals their sales. I would have to say everything on the radio these days is overrated and I wish someone would come out with decent music again....I miss being able to turn on the radio and say, "This is a great new song" I haven't been able to do that in a few years now.

lol @ this thread.

To say the beatles are crap...aye!

The rolling stones?! Maybe... cos they were mostly known for their great singles. 1/2 true

Bob Dylan...crap? O_O OMG -- they have profaned you!

Nevermind was a great album. Melody and energy in 1.

Personally the only HUGE album I can't figure out why its such a huge deal is Dark Side of the Moon... I like breathe and any colour you like but all the moaning and dated sound effects are a bore to listen to.

I pretty much go by the rolling stones 500 albums list.

Don't understand the DMB hate. Sure their new stuff hasn't been to great, but that's fine - don't listen to it. The band's sound changed (as many often do), but for a band that produced crash, under the table and dreaming, live at luther college (just dave matthews and tim reynolds)... basically everything pre-everyday is an amazing collage of what their band can do. Plus as a live band I don't know many people who gave it an honest shot that was dissapointed.
In recent works i would have to agree that they are overrated =

What i find funny about famous people is that if they don't do anything they often get dogged as apathetic or stupid, but when they try to make a difference they get flagged as pretentious assholes using their fame as soapboxes. And while some celeberties are pretentious assholes using their fame as a soapbox - bono isn't telling you you're all worthless, he's just trying to help out a huge area in need. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bono#Humanitarian_work
As for U2's case, how to dismantle an atomic bomb was pretty much a crime

As for the hate on the beatles - It's easy to do as they were hysterically popular, but realize their sound (like U2's and in part maybe DMB's) appeals to a huge group of people. I guess my point overall is I don't think any of these bands are overrated persay (though i dont like much of the new stuff of the DMB or U2).

I didn't list either U2 or Metallica on my top 3 list. Metallica changed, but they have changed for the worse. It's not really a double standard since it is still possible to change and be better.

My guess is that the beatles hate comes from people who only listen to their "radio singles" or whatever you want to call them. I used to think they were a bit overrated until I listened to Abbey Road and the white album.

I don't really feel like DMB has changed. I listened to busted stuff and thought it sounded pretty much the same. I had assumed that they just ran out of good ideas for songs in the exact same style and started putting out the bad ideas.

DSoTM being #43 on that list
No love for the Great Gig in the Sky? Still gives me goosebumps (on a nice setup) after hundreds upon hundreds (maybe even thousands) of listens.

The opinions on bands of anybody under 30 are worthless, especially the under 30 morons that inhabit this forum.

um... overrated != a band that a lot of people like and you do not like.

I have a hard time imagining you could truly classify anything that is innately artistic and personal opinion as overrated.

WTF, pass the crack pipe please :disgust:

I think it is important to make a distinction between what is overrated and what you just don't like. For example I have always disliked like Pink Floyd, probably never will like them, but I would never call them overrated. Without them there would not be bands that I love like Dredg (first two albums). It would be like someone saying The Ramones or Sex Pistols were overrated just because they did not like punk or did not think they were very good musicians (they were not, but that is beside the point).

Anyway, my list:

Oasis
Van Halen (I just don't get it Eddie was a great guitaris and DLR a great showman, but the band as a whole is still overrated IMO)
Moby
